Weekend Football Review

Weekend of upsets!

Premier League MW 7

Man United 1 vs. 1 Everton

Ole rang the changes for this game resting the likes of Ronaldo and Pogba. Everton had several key players like Richarlison, and Calvert-Lewin missing. United started well but despite all the possession Everton stayed strong defensively. The first goal came in 43rd minute thanks to Martial. Everton equalised in the 65th minute thanks to Townsend. Everton had the momentum after equalising and scored an offside winner thanks to Mina. Davies was the one who made the pass to Mina in an offside position but Davies could have finished himself. United remain 4th in the table with the point, one point behind 2nd placed Liverpool. Everton remain 5th in the table and in a similar position points wise. Pressure continues to mount on Ole.

Wolverhampton 2 vs. 1 Newcastle

New signing Hee-Chan gave Wolves the lead in the 20th minute. Hendrick equalised for Newcastle in the 48th minute but Hee-Chan restored Wolves lead in the 58th minute. Wolves did well to see out the game for the win. Wolves move up to 12th in the table. Newcastle drop down to 19th and still without a win this season.

Burnley 0 vs. 0 Norwich

Neither team could get their first win of the season in this relegation battle. Burnley move up to 18th in the table a point from safety. Norwich remain bottom of the table but get their first point of the season and are now off the mark.

Leeds 1 vs. 0 Watford

Llorente scored the only goal of the game in the 18th minute as Leeds got their first win of the season. The win takes Leeds up to16th in the table while Watford drop down to 15th in the table. Following the loss Watford sacked manager Munoz on Sunday. Premature in my opinion but that is what Watford do. Claudio Ranieri was appointed as the new manager on Monday.

Brighton 0 vs. 0 Arsenal

Brighton had 21 shots in this game compared to Arsenal’s 8 and dominated play for the whole game but Arsenal managed to somehow leave the Amex with a point. Brighton remain 6th in the table a point from 2nd while Arsenal drop down to 11th with the point.

Tottenham 2 vs. 1 Aston Villa

Hojbjerg scored in the 27th minute to give Tottenham the lead. Watkins equalised in the 67th minute for Villa but Targett scored an own goal 4 minutes later to restore Tottenham’s lead. West Ham 1 vs. 2 Brentford

Mbeumo gave Brentford the lead in the 20th minute in this London derby. Bowen equalised for West Ham in the 80th minute but Wissa once again popped up with a goal late in the game. This time Wissa scored the winner in the 94th minute to seal three points for Brentford. West Ham drop down to 9th in the table while Brentford move up to 7th in the table. Brentford doing extremely well with 7 games gone.

Crystal Palace 2 vs. 2 Leicester

Iheanacho gave Leicester the lead in the 31st minute. Vardy made it two for Leicester in the 37th minute. Olise got one back for Palace in the 61st minute and Schlupp equalised for the Eagles in the 72nd minute. Palace move up to 14th in the table while Leicester remain 13th in the table and now without a win in their last four.

Liverpool 2 vs. 2 Man City

City dominated Liverpool like they did Chelsea for the first half of this game. Liverpool were suffocated in their own half and found no outlet to counter. The 2nd half both teams decided to go for it and it turned out to be a very entertaining 45 minutes. Mane scored in the 59th minute to give Liverpool the lead. Foden equalised for City 10 minutes later. Salah restored Liverpool’s lead with a brilliant goal similar to Hazard’s from 2018 but De Bruyne finished from outside the box in the 81st minute to get a point for City. Liverpool drop down to 2nd in the table a point behind Chelsea while City sit 3rd in the table 2 points behind Chelsea.

La Liga MW 8

Valencia drew with Cadiz 0-0. Atletico beat Barcelona 2-0, Espanyol beat Real Madrid 2-1, Granada beat Sevilla 1-0, and Villarreal beat Betis 2-0. Real remain top of the table on goal difference but Atletico and Real Sociedad go joint top with them sitting in 2nd and 3rd. Sevilla sit 4th while Valencia and Barcelona sit 8th and 9th. Villarreal sit 11th in the table with their win. A neck and neck race in Spain so far and no team looks like it’s going to put a consistent run of form together at the moment.

Serie MW 7

Juventus beat Torino 0-1, Inter beat Sassuolo 1-2, Bologna beat Lazio 3-0, Napoli beat Fiorentina 1-2, Roma beat Empoli 2-0, and Milan beat Atalanta 2-3. Napoli remain two points clear at the top of Serie A having won every single game so far. Milan, Inter, and Roma complete the top four. Lazio sit 6th and Juventus climb up to 7th in the table with yet another win. Atalanta sit 8th in the league. A very close race in Italy as well although Napoli do seem to be the team to beat right now.

Bundesliga MW 7

Monchengladbach beat Wolfsburg 1-3, Dortmund beat Augsburg 2-1, Leipzig beat Bochum 3-0, Frankfurt beat Bayern 1-2, and Leverkusen beat Arminia 0-4. Bayern see their lead cut to goal difference at the top of the table. Leverkusen, Dortmund, and Freiburg make up the top four. Wolfsburg have dropped down to 5th with the loss while Leipzig move up to 8th in the table. Monchengladbach sit 10th in the table. Bayern might have lost and they might be level but no one willl be too bothered at their club. Bayern switch into work mode in January.
