Chelsea 2 vs. 0 Fulham MW 34 Review

Professional performance!

In between two Champions League games against Real Madrid Chelsea needed to put in a professional performance against Fulham in the league. Fulham had to win this game to keep any momentum for survival but Chelsea just had too much quality. Tuchel made some changes in key areas but Mendy started in goal with Christensen, Silva, and Zouma making up the back 3. James and Chilwell started as the wingbacks while Mount and Gilmour started in the midfield. Werner, Ziyech and Havertz started up front.

Chelsea had a shaky start to the game with Fulham getting a few chances in the early minutes from distance. The Fulham players pressed Chelsea well and pinned the Blues back in their half. The opening goal came in the 10th minute though as a long ball from Silva found Mount who’s first touch was great as he brought the ball down and played an inch perfect pass through the Fulham defence. The pass found Havertz who expertly finished past Areola. It was a very good goal which slightly came against the run of play. The proceeding 10 minutes saw Chelsea dominate but no real chance was create during the rest of the half.

Chelsea made it 2 early in the 2nd half as a ball over the top found Havertz who passed it to Werner and similar to the first goal Werner played a pinpoint pass through the Fulham defence and Havertz slotted past Areola once again. 49 minutes and 2-0 up. The rest of the half saw Chelsea get a better grip of the game but as we approached the end it was clear that the player’s felt tired. It became more about game management than anything else and Chelsea got the 3 points and clean sheet that they wanted.

Chelsea Team Review

Mendy get’s another clean sheet to his name and actually had to make some good saves in this game. A key save came right before half time which kept Chelsea in the lead. Mendy has to be up there as one of the signing’s of the season for the solidity and confidence he has provided the Chelsea defence this season.

Christensen, Silva, and Zouma kept the defence in tact and managed any threat that Fulham threw at them. There was some slick passing on show for the defence as well. Reece James and Chilwell were their usual attacking selves but Reece James in particular stuck out yesterday. Reece dominated Robinson and Lookman and gave them no room to chance to make an impact. It was a top performance. Alonso came late on for Chilwell.

Gilmour got a rare start in this game and it showed that he hasn’t played much. Billy was rusty in the 1st half but grew in the 2nd and it was a decent 90 minutes for the Scot. Mount played his 2nd league game in the pivot and it was a much better performance from last week. It was a solid game and it was a brilliant assist for the first goal. Mount is really becoming the core of the Chelsea team and his utility is allowing players to get some time off. Kante came on for the 2nd half for Mount and managed to see out the game.

Havertz got two big goals for himself and it again similar to Pulisic beginning to get to grips this season. Both goals were brilliant finishes and the first touch was solid. Werner got an assist and probably should have got another when Ziyech’s shot was saved. Werner might not be scoring but he providing much more to the team with his pace and ability to drag players out of play. The German is key and he will only improve. Ziyech had a solid 60-70 minutes and was a creative outlet as well. Tammy came on for a final 20 minutes but the games pace was gone and he had no real chance of making an impact.

For Tuchel the key was to get the 3 points in between two massive games against Real Madrid. The job was done and he will find pride in how the players played the game. Tuchel becomes the manager to have the best start by any manager ever in Premier League history and long may it continue.

Chelsea remain 4th a point behind Leicester and 6 behind United who are yet to play. Chelsea are 6 points ahead of West Ham who are yet to play. It’s a solid footing but much to play for in the league. COME ON!!!
