Champions League MD 4 Preview

The 2nd half of the group stage starts!

Group A

Paris Saint Germain vs. Club Brugge

PSG have a 5 point lead in the group and a win against Brugge should ensure that they finish top of the table. PSG have won 1 lost 1 since they beat Brugge in Belgium by 5 goals. Brugge have played 3 won 2 and drawn 1. Brugge are decent opposition but PSG will be looking to bounce back from losing to Dijon and so this should be a win for the home team.

Real Madrid vs. Galatasaray

Galatasaray need to win this game if they want to stand a chance of reaching the next phase in this years Champions League while Real also need to win to ease the pressure on Zidane. Madrid have won 1 drawn 1 since beating Galatasaray by a goal in Istanbul while Galatasaray have lost 1 and won 1. Real Madrid are shaky at the moment and so if Galatasaray are solid at the back they could sneak a point or more.

Group B

Red Star Belgrade vs. Tottenham

A point separates the two teams as a win for Tottenham would open up a nice cushion between 2nd and 3rd while a win for Red Star would see them move to 2nd. Tottenham have lost 1 and drawn 1 since they beat Red Star 5-0 in London while Red Star have played 3 and won 3. An away trip to Belgrade is tough and so this should be an interesting game for Spurs.

Bayern Munich vs. Olympiacos

Bayern are pretty much guaranteed a spot in the next stage while a win could see them seal top spot in the group as well. They have won 2 and lost 1 since they beat Olympiacos in Athens while the Greek side have won 1 and drawn 1. Bayern may be finding it difficult in the Bundesliga but they have recently sacked Kovac since their loss to Frankfurt and so a bounce back is expected.

Group C

Atalanta vs. Man City

Man City beat Atalanta and have since won all three games as a win in Italy would see them seal progression to the next phase and possibly top spot as well. Atalanta have won 1, drawn 1, and lost 1, since losing to City but have to win this game to stand any real chance of reaching the Europa League let alone the next phase. A tough game for the Italians awaits.

Dinamo Zagreb vs. Shakhtar Donetsk

These teams drew on the last match day and Dinamo have since won all three of their games while Shakhtar have drawn 1, lost 1, and won 1. The teams are level and right now its a fight between them to see who reaches the next round and who drops down to the Europa League. Dinamo are in better form but Shakhtar have the experience.

Group D

Bayer Leverkusen vs. Atletico Madrid

Leverkusen have lost all three of their games as they welcome Atletico for whom a win would mean that they almost guarantee a place in the next round. Atletico have won 1 and drawn 2 since MD 3 while Leverkusen have drawn 1, won 1 and lost 1. Atletico are in better form and so should win this game while Leverkusen need to win to stand any chance at the Europa League let alone the next phase.

Lokomotiv Moskva vs. Juventus

Juventus have drawn 1 and won 2 since MD 3 while Lokomotiv have lost 1 and drawn 1. A Juventus win would pretty much seal the top two spots while a Lokomotiv win would make the final two games interesting. Juventus should win this though but Moscow is a tough away trip.

Group E

Liverpool vs. Genk

It’s all to play for in Group E as Liverpool entertain Genk. Liverpool have won all three of their games since beating Genk while Genk have won 1, drawn 1, and lost 1. Liverpool might rest a few players but if they win and Red Bull lose then it could see them seal a place in the knockout stages. Genk need to win to stand a chance at the Europa League.

Napoli vs. Red Bull Salzburg

Napoli have drawn 2 and lost 1 since MD 3 when they beat Red Bull while the Austrian side have won all three of their games. It’s an important game for Red Bull and a win would see them stand a fair chance at the knockout stages while a loss would make it very difficult. Red Bull are in better form but they have to stay strong defensively.

Group F

Barcelona vs. Slavia Praha

A win for Barcelona could see them seal a spot in the knockout stages while Slavia have to win if they want to finish 3rd at least. Barcelona have won 1 lost 1, while Slavia have won 2 and lost 1. Barcelona should make this an easy win and seal a spot in the next stage.

Borussia Dortmund vs. Inter Milan

These teams are level on points and its a straight shootout between the two for a spot in the next stage. Dortmund have drawn 1 and won 2 since losing to Inter while Inter have drawn 1 and won 2 as well. A really interesting game which can go either way. Barcelona have to play both these teams in the final two games and if these teams win those games then they both could qualify for the next phase with Barcelona dropping down.

Group G

Zenit vs. RB Leipzig

Zenit have won 2 and drawn 1 while Leipzig have lost 1 and won 2 since MD 3. This truly is the group of death and a win for either team would help their case but not guarantee anyone a position in the next round. Leipzig won round 1 let’s see who wins round 2.

Olympique Lyon vs. Benfica

Lyon have won both their games since MD 3 while Benfica have won all three of their games since beating Lyon on MD 3. A win for Benfica would make the group a tasty affair while a win for Lyon would see Benfica looking at a Europa League place as a realistic target.

Group H

Valencia vs. Lille

Lille have to win this game if they want to stand a chance of making the knockout phase while a win for Valencia could see them move into the top two depending on results elsewhere. Lille have won 1 and lost 1 since MD 3 while Valencia have lost 1 drawn 1 and won 1. A tough game with either team looking at the Europa League spot as a realistic option.

Weekend Football Review

Late winners and plenty of shocks!

Premier League MW 11

Bournemouth 1 vs. 0 Man United

This was not one of the shocks because many expected that United would lose to Bournemouth. If United played the top 6 week in week out then they would be in the top 6 but there are 14 other teams and United are poor against them. Josh King scored in the 45th minute as a goal was enough to see Bournemouth get three points. Bournemouth climb up to 7th in the table while United drop down to 10th.

Arsenal 1 vs. 1 Wolverhampton

This was not a shock either as Arsenal continued their form of drawing games by sharing points with Wolves although it is a good point for the gunners. Aubameyang scored in the 21st minute via a rapid counter attack but Jimenez scored in the 76th minute to share the spoils. Arsenal are still 5th but now 6 points behind 4th while Wolves remain 12th.

Aston Villa 1 vs. 2 Liverpool

Villa took a surprise lead in this game as Trezeguet scored his first goal for the Villians in the 21st minute. It was all going so well for Villa and they stayed strong up till the 87th minute but Robertson equalised for Liverpool via a good header. Mane then scored in the 94th minute to seal the comeback for Liverpool and maintain their unbeaten run. To say that Liverpool have luck on their side would be an understatement while VAR was also shambolic. Villa drop to 16th with the loss while Liverpool remain top of the table.

Brighton 2 vs. 0 Norwich

Brighton continue their good form at home while Norwich continue to lose form since their win against City as Trossard and Duffy scored in the 2nd half to seal three points for the Seagulls. Brighton climb all the way up to 8th with the win while Norwich remain 19th and 4 points off of safety.

Man City 2 vs. 1 Southampton

Man City seem to have been thinking that what Liverpool can do we can do as well because it was another late comeback win. Ward-Prowse gave Southampton the lead in the 13th minute and the Saints held on for much of the game. Aguero then scored in the 70th minute to equalise and Walker scored in the 86th minute to seal the win. City play Liverpool next and a loss would have meant a potential 12 point gap if Liverpool won next weekend but this win means that City can cut it down to 3. Southampton remain 18th with the loss.

Sheffield United 3 vs. 0 Burnley

Sheffield go from strength to strength as they got a convincing win against Burnley. All the goals came in the first half as Lundstram scored two while Fleck scored right before half time. Sheffield now move up to 6th eyeing that Europa League spot while Burnley drop into 14th with their 3rd loss in a row.

West Ham 2 vs. 3 Newcastle

Newcastle managed the three points thanks to an early onslaught of goals. Clark and Fernandez scored in the 1st half and Shelvey added one in the 2nd to give the Magpies a comfortable 0-3 lead. Balbuena then scored in the 73rd minute and Snodgrass in the 90th to make it a nervy ending. West Ham make it 5 games without any wins as they drop down to 13th while Newcastle climb up to 15th.

Crystal Palace 0 vs. 2 Leicester

After a tough 1st half Leicester won the game in the 2nd thanks to goals from Soyuncu, and Vardy. It was a top 6 clash which now sees Palace drop to 9th while Leicester move back into 3rd after Chelsea had played on Saturday.

Everton 1 vs. 1 Tottenham

A tight 1st half saw all hell break lose in the 2nd with VAR going crazy, Dele Alli giving Spurs the lead in the 63rd minute, and then the sad injury to Andre Gomes who collided with Aurier which led to his ankle breaking. Tosun though grabbed a goal in the 97th minute which got a deserved point for the Toffees. Son was also wrongly sent off as the referee reacted to the foul he had made prior to the Gomes injury. VAR would have shown that it was not Son’s tackle that injured Gomes. Everton drop down into 17th while Tottenham remain 11th.

A short note on VAR – It is important that VAR functions properly because it is a good addition to football when it works. In it’s current form though VAR is just causing more problems than solutions. This weekend saw a slew of wrong decisions made by VAR and the lack of a screen at the side of the pitch which the on field referee could consult was evident. The FA need to look at Serie A or other sports like Rugby, and Cricket to see how to better implement this technology.

La Liga MW 12

A shocking weekend in La Liga as Barcelona lost to Levante 3-1, Atletico drew with Sevilla 1-1, and Real drew with Betis 0-0. The biggest surprise was the Barcelona loss as Sevilla and Real Betis are good teams and especially with Atletico and Real not really at their normal levels. Barcelona still lead but are now level on points with Real Madrid and Real Sociedad while Atletico are 4th.

Serie MW 11

Roma beat Napoli 2-1, Inter beat Bologna 1-2, Juventus beat Torino 0-1, Cagliari beat Atalanta 0-2, and Lazio beat Milan 1-2. Routine wins for the top teams as Juventus lead the table with a 1 point gap with Inter, Roma, and Lazio making up the top four. Milan squander in 11th as it looks like another disappointing season for the legendary team.

Bundesliga MW 10

Monchengladbach beat Leverkusen 1-2, Frankfurt thrashed Bayern 5-1 after Boateng had been sent off early on, Leipzig thrashed Mainz 8-0, and Dortmund beat Wolfsburg 3-0. Big wins and big losses in Germany this weekend as Monchengladbach open a 3 point lead at the top of the table with Dortmund, Leipzig, and Bayern making up the top four. The Bundesliga is still the most entertaining at the moment as 2 points separate 2nd from 9th.

Ligue MW 12

Dijon beat PSG 2-1, Marseille beat Lille 2-1, Lyon beat Toulouse 2-3, and St.Etienne beat Monaco 1-0. PSG lost to Dijon in a shocking defeat but saw their lead remain intact as they still remain 7 points clear of the rest. Angers, Nantes, and Marseille make up the top four. Monaco are 15th.

Watford 1 vs. 2 Chelsea Review

The scoreline does not reflect the game.

Chelsea beat Watford away from home 1-2 with Tammy and Pulisic grabbing the goals while Watford got a goal thanks to VAR. I finally predicted the right lineup by Lampard as Kepa started in goal with Emerson, Tomori, Zouma and Azpilicueta making up the defence. Jorginho, Kovacic, and Mount started in midfield with Pulisic, Tammy, and Willian up front.

Chelsea started the game off really well as we pressed high up and allowed Watford no breathing space and the work was rewarded in the 5th minute as Jorginho made a brilliant one touch pass to set Tammy free and he finished expertly past Foster. Chelsea continued to dominate the half with Watford having little to no chances and it if it were not for Foster then Chelsea could have easily had 3-4 goals in the first half. The 2nd half started in similar fashion with Foster making more saves as the scoreline stayed 0-1. It was Pulisic though who doubled the lead in the 55th minute as Tammy cut back a pass which found the American. Watford got a lifeline in the 80th minute as Deolofeu dived in the box and the on field referee gave nothing but because VAR thought that there was contact the penalty was given and Deolofeu converted to make it a nervy final 10 minutes. Kepa had the last action of the game as he made a brilliant save from Foster.

Player-wise Kepa did not have much to do and should have had a clean sheet but he made a brilliant save at the end for three points. Emerson had a good return to playing while Tomori also played well, Zouma stood out at the back as he was solid and made several blocks that Terry would be proud of. Azpilicueta was also assured at the back. Jorginho and Kovacic ran the midfield once again and words can not explain how good it is to see these guys play. The two did over play it in the incident that gave the penalty but otherwise they were world class. Mount had a good game and should have got a goal after the ball had hit the post. Pulisic makes it 4 goals in 2 as he continued his good form, Tammy made it 9 goals in the league and 10 overall, and Willian ran a lot.

3 points for Lampard a return to winning ways as we move to 3rd temporarily. Happy days for Chelsea fans, COME ON YOU BLUES!!!

Watford vs. Chelsea Preview

A wounded animal is dangerous.

Chelsea play London based team Watford in a derby on Saturday. Watford sit bottom of the Premier League table having not won a game all season. Watford have drawn 5 and lost 5 but recently they have drawn their last three games in the Premier League which shows slight improvement. Watford have already made managerial changes this season by sacking Gracia and bringing back Flores. Watford have lost to City by 8 goals but they did manage draws against Arsenal and Tottenham and so Chelsea will have to be clinical and solid.

Chelsea go into this game having ended their winning streak by a loss to Manchester United on Wednesday night in the Carabao Cup. It was not the greatest of games by either team and it was really only the penalty and the Rashford free kick that decided the game. The Carabao Cup is a bit of an anomaly though and so Chelsea have a quick chance to bounce back.

Chelsea Team Preview

Chelsea will be without Rudiger, and Loftus-Cheek who are out due to long term problems. Kante, Barkley, and Christensen are fit but not match fit and so this game could come too soon for them. Emerson should be back and ready to go. Kepa will start in goal after a rest, Emerson, Zouma, Tomori, and Azpilicueta should start in the defence. Jorginho, Kovacic, and Mount should start in midfield with Pulisic, Tammy, and Willian up front. Apart from the midfield several of these players were rested and so Chelsea should have a fresh team that can take advantage of Watford.

Watford Team Preview

Deeney, Sarr, Welbeck, Cleverley, and Quina are all big misses for Watford while Flores has the rest of the players to select from. Watford have focused on defence for now by playing 5 at the back and while several key players might be out they do have players like Deolofeu who can damage any team.

Starting XI Prediciton

Watford might not have won a game but this is a tough clash and Chelsea will have to perform well to get a win. COME ON YOU BLUES!!!

Weekend Football Preview

Back to league football!

Premier League MW 11

Bournemouth vs. Man United

Man United have been in good form in recent weeks as they travel to Bournemouth looking to make it 4 wins in a row. United are 7th while Bournemouth are 9th, Bournemouth have not won in 4 weeks as they look to get a home win against a beatable United side. United tend to struggle against the smaller teams and so this should be an interesting fixture.

Arsenal vs. Wolverhampton

5th placed Arsenal take on 12th placed Wolves as the gunners look to lift the gloom at the Emirates. These teams lost during the week against Liverpool, and Villa in the Carabao Cup but those teams were fairly rotated. Arsenal are in some turmoil at the moment and Wolves always cause problems against the top 6 sides and so I have a feeling Wolves will add to their wins against top teams.

Aston Villa vs. Liverpool

League leaders Liverpool visit London to play 15th placed Villa who have had an inconsistent start to the league this season. Liverpool managed once again to win their game against Arsenal while Villa beat Wolves but had lost last weekend in the league to City. This should be a tough game for Liverpool but with most of the squad rested this should be a win for the Reds.

Brighton vs. Norwich

14th placed Brighton take on 19th placed Norwich who are desperate for a win. Brighton are strong at home but both teams have had problems and if Norwich want to survive they need to start winning games soon. This fixture could go either way.

Man City vs. Southampton

2nd placed Man City play Southampton for the 2nd game in a row having beaten them in the Carabao Cup during the week. Southampton are 18th and their most important goal for this game is to keep the scoreline below 5 goals due to their thrashing last weekend. Easy win for City.

Sheffield United vs. Burnley

Sheffield United sit 8th as they entertain Burnley who are 13th as Sheffield look to maintain their momentum. Sheffield have been doing well this season while Burnley have struggled with consistency and this should be a tough away trip. This game could easily be a draw with not many goals expected as both teams are defensive.

West Ham vs. Newcastle

10th placed West Ham search for their first win in four as they welcome 17th placed Newcastle who have also not won in 3 weeks. West Ham were doing well but have fallen off in recent weeks and so Newcastle are good opponents to gain momentum from while Newcastle will hope they can have some luck in London.

Crystal Palace vs. Leicester

6th placed Palace welcome 3rd placed Leicester in a top 6 clash as Leicester look to follow their big win against Southampton by maintaining their position in the top four. Palace have done extremely well but should begin to fall off as the season goes on and so while this game could be tough for both teams Leicester should edge this game.

Everton vs. Tottenham

Tottenham who sit 11th travel to 16th placed Everton as both these teams are struggling to patch form together. Tottenham have not won in three weeks while Everton have lost four of their last five games. Tottenham on paper should win this game but Everton are good opposition and so this should be an interesting game to keep an eye on.

La Liga MW 12

Barcelona travel to Levante, Atletico play Sevilla, Real Madrid entertain Real Betis. Tough games for all team involved as things begin to heat up in La Liga. Real Madrid have been in good form recently while Atletico need to start picking up some good form.

Serie MW 11

Roma take on Napoli, Inter travel to Bologna, Torino take on Juventus in a derby, Atalanta take on Cagliari, and Milan play Lazio. Tough fixtures for all teams involved as Serie A could see a shake up at the top this weekend.

Bundesliga MW 10

Bayer take on Monchengladbach, Frankfurt welcome Bayern, Leipzig welcome Mainz, and Dortmund take on Wolfsburg. Bundesliga is one of the most interesting leagues this season and it’s another tough weekend of games in Germany.

Ligue MW 12

PSG travel to Dijon, Marseille take on Lille, Lyon travel to Toulouse, and Monaco play St.Etienne. PSG are running away with Ligue 1 once again while Monaco are getting some good form in recent weeks.

Chelsea 1 vs. 2 Manchester United Carabao Cup Round of 16 Review

A tough pill to swallow.

Chelsea lost to Manchester United in the Carabao Cup round of 16 as Rashford scored two for the Red Devils. Ole picked a strong lineup with only Martial left out. Caballero started in goal for Chelsea, Alonso, Zouma, Guehi, and James started in defence, Jorginho, Kovacic, and Gilmour started in midfield while Pulisic, Michy and CHO started up front.

Chelsea started the brighter of the two teams but failed to create anything from the possession they had. Alonso then brought down Daniel James in the box and Rashford converted the penalty to give United the lead in the 25th minute. United then dominated the half but similar to Chelsea they also created little to nothing. The 2nd half saw a rejuvenated Chelsea come out as we pressed higher and with more intensity. Michy equalised in the 61st minute as he knocked down a lofted pass and dribbled past most of the United defence to finish brilliantly. Pedro was then brought on for Pulisic and Mount was brought on for Gilmour but Pedro brought down a United player for a foul in the 73rd minute. Rashford stepped up and scored a brilliant free kick to restore United’s lead. Tammy came on for Michy but could not impact the game as United drifted to a win a progressed to the next round.

The defeat is not too disheartening as it is the Carabao Cup and Chelsea were not dominated but lost due to two poor fouls. Guehi, Reece James, and Gilmour stood in the game as they took advantage of their game time and its only a matter of time till Reece starts more games. Jorginho and Kovacic were solid in the middle once again but Pedro and Alonso were poor and were at fault for Chelsea’s defeat. For United Ole gets an important win and they continue their impressive form against top 6 sides while it is against the weaker teams that they struggle.

Chelsea move on and next up is Watford away from home. COME ON YOU BLUES!!!

Midweek Football Review

Usual suspects.

Carabao Cup Round of 16

Burton 1 vs. 3 Leicester

Iheanacho and Tielemans scored in the 1st half to give Leicester a comfortable lead at half time. Boyce then scored in the 52nd minute to give Burton some hope but Maddison scored at the end of the game to seal a win for Leicester.

Everton 2 vs. 0 Watford

Holgate and Richarlison scored in the final 20 minutes of the 2nd half to get Marcos Silva a win against his former side. Watford continue their form without a win while Everton get some momentum.

Man City 3 vs. 1 Southampton

Otamendi and Aguero scored in the 1st half while Aguero added a 3rd in the 2nd half before Stephens got a consolation goal for Southampton. City continue their form in a usual win while Southampton manage to concede less than 5.

Liverpool 5 (5) vs. (4) 5 Arsenal

An entertaining game to say the least as Liverpool won on penalties. Mustafi scored an own goal in the 6th minute to give Liverpool the lead. Torreira then equalised for Arsenal in the 19th minute following which Martinelli scored in the 26th and 36th minute to give the Gunners a 1-3 lead. Milner then scored a penalty in the 43rd minute to make it 2-3 at half time. Maitland-Niles scored in the 54th minute to give Arsenal a 2-4 lead but the Gunners could not hold on as Chamberlain and Origi scored in the following ten minutes to make it level. Willock then scored a belter of a goal in the 70th minute and it seemed like that would be the winner for Arsenal but Origi scored in the 94th minute to take the game to penalties. Liverpool finished all their penalties as they move on to the quarter finals.

Aston Villa 2 vs. 1 Wolverhampton

El Ghazi gave Villa the lead in the 28th minute but the 2nd half saw Cutrone equalise for Wolves in the 54th minute. Elmohamady then scored the winner for Villa in the 57th minute.

La Liga MW 11

Atletico drew against Alaves 1-1, Barcelona beat Valladolid 5-1, Sevilla drew against Valencia 1-1, and Real Madrid beat Leganes 5-0. Barcelona move to the top with Granada still to play while Real Madrid, Granada, and Atletico make up the top four.

Serie MW 10

Inter beat Brescia 1-2, Napoli drew with Atalanta 2-2, Roma beat Udinese 0-4, Juventus beat Genoa 2-1, and Milan are yet to play. Juventus, Inter, Atalanta, and Roma make up the top four while Milan could go up to 10th with a win.

DFB Pokal 2nd Round

Bayern beat VFL Bochum 1-2, Leverkusen beat Paderborn 1-0, Leipzig beat Wolfsburg 1-6, Dortmund beat Monchengladbach 2-1, and Frankfurt beat St.Pauli 1-2. Usual wins for Germany’s top sides in the cup but Dortmund had to fight hard while Leipzig were dominant.

Coupe De La Ligue Round of 32

Nice lost to Le Mans 3-2, Monaco beat Marseille 2-1 to make it twice in a row as they begin to gain some form in recent weeks.

Chelsea vs. Manchester United Carabao Cup Round of 16 Preview

Time for some redemption!

Chelsea take on Manchester United in the Carabao Cup Round of 16 on Wednesday night as we look to seal a place in the quarter-finals. Manchester United sit 7th in the Premier League having won 3 games drawn 4 and lost 3. United beat Rochdale in the Round of 32 on penalties and have since won 2 of their 6 games. United’s most recent win came in the Premier League as they beat Norwich at Carrow Road 1-3 with an impressive performance by Martial but the opposition also has to be taken into account. Since United beat Chelsea in the first matchweek the teams have taken different paths. United have dropped points and struggled to win games while losing to weaker teams. Performing against the top teams has not been an issue for Ole and his team but it is the bottom teams where they have struggled. Either way League form is thrown out when the Cup games come around.

Chelsea beat Grimsby 7-1 in the Round of 32 for what was Lampard’s first home win of the season and the Blues have since won all 6 of their games with several brilliant away performances taken into account. Chelsea have not been as free scoring at home as they have been away from home but this is a brilliant chance for the team and Lampard to set the record straight against United.

Chelsea Team Preview

Since the game is against United one can expect some rotation but not as much as what came against Grimsby. Kepa should start in goal while Emerson, Tomori, Zouma, and Reece James should start in defence. Jorginho, and Gilmour should start in the midfield with Pulisic potentially playing in the number 10 role. Hudson-Odoi, Michy Batshuayi, and Pedro should start up front. The likes of Tammy, Willian, Mount, Kovacic should all be available off the bench if needed.

Man United Team Preview

Martial is back for United but the likes of Pogba, and Shaw are still out injured. Ole is looking to patch a few wins up and so I expect a strong lineup against Chelsea with not many youth players featuring.

Starting XI Prediction

It might just be the Carabao Cup but it is a big game for both teams but for Chelsea it is a chance to set the record straight and show how much Lampard and Chelsea have improved since August. COME ON YOU BLUES!!!

Midweek Football Preview

Cups and Leagues continue!

Carabao Cup Round of 16

Burton vs Leicester

Burton beat Bournemouth 2-0 to reach the Round of 16 while Leicester beat Luton 0-4. Burton sit 13th in League One having won 2 of their 6 games since, while Leicester are 3rd in the Premier League having won 3 of their 4 games. Leicester should win this on paper and on the pitch but since Luton are home they will make it a difficult game.

Everton vs. Watford

An all Premier League fixture as Everton take on Watford. Everton beat Sheffield Wednesday in the last round while Watford beat Swansea. Everton have been inconsistent but Watford are at the bottom of the league although they have drawn their last three games. League form never matters when cup games come along and so this should be an interesting fixture.

Man City vs. Southampton

City 2nd in the league go up against Southampton who are 18th. City beat Preston in the last round while Southampton beat Portsmouth and both teams face off in the league once again next weekend. Southampton lost to Leicester by 9 goals and so City will be licking their lips at the prospect of causing more damage even though City have not been at their best themselves.

Liverpool vs. Arsenal

Another all Premier League clash as league leaders Liverpool face off against Arsenal who sit 5th. Liverpool beat MK Dons in the last round while Arsenal beat Nottingham Forest. Liverpool have not been their best but unlike previous seasons they are grinding wins out and Arsenal are suffering some turmoil within the club. Arsenal did not have a great weekend and if Liverpool are solid they can easily pile even more misery on the London club.

Aston Villa vs. Wolverhampton

Premier League clash once again Villa who are 15th take on 12th placed Wolves in this round. Villa have been decent since being promoted but have been too inconsistent while Wolves have improved over the last few weeks after a poor start. Villa beat Brighton in the last round while Wolves won on penalties against Reading. This should be a close and interesting game.

La Liga MW 11

Atletico travel to Alaves, Barcelona take on Valladolid, Sevilla travel to Valencia, and Real Madrid welcome Leganes. Barcelona and Real Madrid play catch up to the rest as they return to games after a week off. Granada travel to Getafe looking to keep their lead at the top of the table.

Serie MW 10

Inter travel to Brescia, Napoli take on Atalanta, Roma travel to Udinese, Juventus take on Genoa, and Milan welcome SPAL. Several draws at the top during the weekend shortened the gap at the top as Juventus and Inter look to return to winning ways.

DFB Pokal 2nd Round

Bayern travel to VFL Bochum, Leverkusen take on Paderborn, Wolfsburg take on Leipzig, Dortmund welcome Monchengladbach, and Frankfurt travel to St.Pauli. Some tough fixtures in this round of the German League Cup but Bayern should have an easy win.

Coupe De La Ligue Round of 32

Nice travel to Le Mans, Monaco take on Marseille as these teams look to win a domestic trophy rather than the league.

Burnley 2 vs. 4 Chelsea Review

Captain America’s day!

Chelsea put 4 past Burnley before conceding two late goals as Pulisic scored a hattrick while Willian added the 4th. Burnley had their similar lineup while Lampard also stuck to his team with the only change being Pulisic in for Hudson-Odoi. Pulisic had a point to prove in this game and he did just that with a man of the match performance and more selection problems for Frank in the coming weeks.

The game started off slowly with Burnley seeing much of the ball and creating a few chances of their own but the defence stayed solid and Kepa was not troubled. Pulisic scored the first of his 3 goals in the 21st minute as he latched on to a lose ball from Lowton who was caught in possession and he dribbled the length of the Burnley half to expertly finish past Pope. Chelsea then had to work hard for their 2nd goal as Burnley stayed strong defensively and Pulisic’s 2nd goal came right before half time in similar fashion but this time he finished with his right foot and the shot took a deflection. 0-2 at half time and 2 more to come.

The 2nd half started with Chelsea again dominating play as Kovacic and Jorginho expertly controlled the midfield. Pulisic completed his hattrick in the 56th minute as Mount’s cross was headed in by the American. Willian then added a 4th 2 minutes later with a typical Willian goal that involved a shrug of the shoulder and a good finish. Chelsea conceded two goals in the final 5 minutes and it left a slight blemish on what was a great away performance.

Kepa made a really good save during the game but had little to do otherwise. Alonso was again good, Tomori was standout again, he occasionally makes the mistake but his recovery during the 2nd half when Rodriguez was through on goal was epic. Zouma was again really good as well while Azpi was solid. Jorginho and Kovacic continue to dominate the midfield and help us forget about Kante for now as they great performances again. Mount got an assist and was again running around and winning the ball while also creating opportunities. Willian was good, Tammy still searches for more goals but showed great play without the ball and continues to improve while Pulisic was awesome.

Chelsea remain 4th but 4 points clear of Arsenal while Burnley are 13th in the table. Next up for Chelsea is a visit from Manchester United in the League Cup for what should be a tasty fixture. COME ON YOU BLUES!!!
