Euro 2020 Round of 16 Day 1 Review

Two great games to start off!

Wales 0 vs. 4 Denmark

Wales started this game off well as they put pressure on Denmark but the Danes grew into the game. The first goal came in the 27th minute as Dolberg made space outside the box and curled in a beautiful effort. The 2nd goal came in the 48th minute after a poor clearance from Neco Williams found Dolberg in the box and he smashed it to double the lead. Denmark held onto the lead as Wales offered very little in return. Maehle then made it 3 in the 88th minute while Braithwaite sealed the win with a 4th in the 94th minute. It was massive win for Denmark in a professional manner as they move onto the quarter-finals. The major difference between the Danes and Wales was that the Welsh got caught in the emotion. After going a goal down Wales felt deflated and they began to lose their head as the game went on. No one could really cope with the pressure and bar Bale who also lost his head there was no leader to grab them and pull them through. Wales will be back in the World Cup but Denmark showed what it takes to win.

Italy 2 vs. 1 Austria

Over 90 minutes this game was dominated by one team and that was Austria. Italy stayed strong defensively as the defence and Donnarumma made some good blocks and saves. Austria did manage to score in regular time but Arnautovic was ruled offside. As the game went into extra time the first goal came in the 95th minute as Chiesa off the bench made it 1-0 for Italy with a fantastic shot. Pessina did the same in the 105th minute but from the left hand side to make it 2-0. Kalajdzic got one back for Austria in the 114th minute with a brilliant header at the near post but Italy held on for the win. Italy won’t play as poorly as they did in this game for the rest of the Euros but they held on and thats whats needed for potential champions. Austria fought hard but the depth and quality available to Italy was far superior.

Sheffield United vs. Chelsea MW 23 Preview

Another tough game!

Chelsea travel to Sheffield United for MW 23 of the Premier League season on Sunday night. Sheffield United still bottom of the table have 3 wins this season all coming over the last 5 games. The Blades have finally managed to pick up some form but still find themselves 12 points from safety with a mountain to climb. Last season Sheffield United were one of the surprise teams that did well just missing out on Europa League football. This season a very poor start has found them well off the pace and that could be due to multiple reasons. One factor that has played a part in Sheffield United’s poor form has been the absence of fans due to Covid. Sheffield United one of the smaller clubs is very much driven by the backing they have both home and away. Playing the defensive football that play can be tough if their isn’t a full stadium cheering you on. So with 16 games to go they look to pull off a miracle this season and stay up.

Chelsea go into this game having beaten Spurs 0-1 in the last game. It was a game in which the Blues dominated the 1st half and managed to see out the 2nd without any real threat coming their way. It’s been a positive start under Tuchel and the players along with the manager will want to continue that. The football has been quick and the pressing has been intense but if there is one criticism I have of Chelsea at the moment it is the lack of finishing up front. The fact is that after all the dominance we have had and all the chances we have created we have only scored 3 goals. 2 by defenders and 1 penalty. Now granted Burnley and Spurs did sit back and make it hard and there was little space but still we could have scored way more. It has been a problem since the 17/18 season, we tend to create so much but finish only a fraction of those chances. That is one area that I want Chelsea to show improvement in. The players are playing well all that is missing are the goals.

Chelsea Team Preview

Tuchel has a fully fit squad to select from apart from Silva who was injured in the last game and I expect there to be some rotation but not a lot since we do play Barnsley in our next game. Mendy should start in goal and I actually think that we might switch to a back four for this game. Reece James and Chilwell as the full backs with Zouma and Rudiger as the centre backs. Mount and Kovacic should start in the midfield with Havertz playing right behind Werner as the striker. Hudson-Odoi and Ziyech should start as the wingers. Of course it’s really anyones guess when it comes to Tuchel because he likes tweaking the formation and the lineup so this is more of a personal choice than anything else. Sheffield United will be expecting us to start with a back three and playing a back four could surprise them and give us an advantage.

Sheffield United Team Preview

Sheffield United will be without Ethan Ampadu who is on loan from Chelsea and has been playing really well for them but other than that the players should be available. Sheffield United should use their patented 3 at the back formation and with some key players back they still pose a threat. Sharp has been important in recent weeks while the likes of Lundstram and Fleck can always cause problems. Its going to be a tough task to break this team down.

Starting XI Prediction

IMG_1187

It’s yet another game for Chelsea in which we have to break 5 man defence to score and hopefully we have gotten better at it and win convincingly. It’s going to be tough but nothing good ever came easy. COME ON CHELSEA!!!

Chelsea vs. Luton Town FA Cup 4th Round Preview

We go again!

Chelsea welcome 13th placed Championship club Luton Town at Stamford Bridge on Sunday for the 4th round of the FA Cup. Luton sit 6 points from 7th at the moment as they stand an outside shot at making a play off place. Luton have gone through a resurgence in recent years as they were promoted from League Two in 17/18. In 18/19 they gained a second successive promotion to enter the Championship from League One and have since remained there. This season Luton have won 9 drawn 6 and lost 10 in the league. Luton beat Reading 1-0 in the last round and have since won 1 and lost 2 of their games.

Chelsea go into this game having beat Morecambe 4-0 in the last round. We then went on to beat Fulham but lost to Leicester during the week with the pressure back on Lampard after a short reprieve. It’s safe to say that Chelsea go into this game in a cloud of rumours, and bad reviews with the team having put in another lacklustre performance against Leicester and looking out of it. The press conference on Friday saw Lampard come out swinging as he pulled no punches and reiterated his desire to turn it around. Lampard was asked a quiet nonsensical question about when he thought the new signings would reach their potential. The question really had no answer and the journalist himself got flustered after asking it. Lampard then asserted himself when asked about player confidence as he criticised journalists for writing articles that would obviously damage any players morale and a certain confirmation bias used when writing them. Lampard’s defending his players and no one can really blame him for that and if journalists can write such scathing pieces about players and managers then they should know that it can reach the point when a the player or manager answers back. There weren’t any other major questions asked but quotes in the embargoed section have Lampard speaking about just winning games for now and showing the drive and hunger in game. Lampard has also defended Kai Havertz once again and said that he will be a top player without a doubt but needs time.

Chelsea Team Preview

Kepa should return in goal for this game and I expect, Rudiger and Christensen to also feature as the centre backs. Azpilicueta and Emerson should start as the full backs. I would actually switch to a more simple 4-2-3-1 for this game with Gilmour and Kova as the two CDM’s. Pulisic, Havertz, and Hudson-Odoi to play behind Werner. Just something different and really if those front 4 can’t finish goals I don’t know what will at this club. The 4-3-3 isn’t working at the moment and literally a minor tweak can switch things up. We could also play a 4-4-2 with Giroud and Werner up front but I think that less plausible. Chelsea as usual will have plenty of possession so we shouldn’t really need that extra player in midfield. 4 quality players should be enough to break the lines and finish off chances. We had a strong lineup against Morecambe and we should have the same in this game as we look to continue to game momentum.

Luton Town Team Preview

Luton under their manager Nathan Jones are quiet flexible when it comes to formations. I think for this game they will stick with a 3-5-2 of sorts to sit back and defend and counter when given the opportunity. Dewsbury-Hall a loan player from Leicester is one to keep an eye on in the midfield while James Collins is their top scorer with 9 goals this season. Luton don’t seem to score many or concede many so it is set up to be a smash and grab type of game.

Starting XI Prediction

Chelsea and Lampard just need to get the results, but hopefully we can field some of our starters in this game and the attack can continue to form chemistry for the next few games. COME ON CHELSEA!!!

Arsenal vs. Chelsea MW 15 Preview

Big London Derby!

Chelsea travel to the Emirates on Boxing day as we take on 15th placed Arsenal with the gunners 4 points above the relegation zone and winless in the league since November 1st. Arsenal have been in really poor form this season having won only 4 of their 14 games and lost 8 of them. The poor results have kept on coming and while the fans begin to voice their concerns it seems like Arteta is here to stay regardless. The FA Cup win and win against United in the league seems like distant memories for a team that has nothing going for them at the moment and Arteta seems to have no clue how to fix it. They have scored only 12 goals in the league while conceding 18 so they are neither conceding goals but they aren’t scoring them either and that’s allowing teams to pick them off with a goal or two.

Chelsea go into this game sitting 5th in the table and win could see us go 2nd in the table if results elsewhere go our way. We were able to end a run of two defeats with a hard fought win against West Ham on Monday and now we head into another London derby. The first step to progress is to accept where one can improve and for Chelsea that area is when we face struggling teams. Too many a times do we come up against teams in poor form and give them a needless win which is then followed by more poor form. It happened with Wolves more recently and now Arsenal turn up and the Chelsea of old would give Arsenal an out of context win but we cannot let that happen. We have a week of rest and we have a strong set of players that are well ahead of Arsenal’s and we should be winning this game. It’s a London derby and that brings a certain fire to the game but Lampard and Chelsea will be more than up for it.

Chelsea Team Preview

Chelsea might be without Reece James and Ben Chilwell who suffered injuries last week. The two are set to come back soon but maybe this game could be too soon. According to Lampard Ziyech will not be available either which is a slight downer. The rest of the squad should be available and fit to play. Mendy will keep his place in goal with Azpilicueta and Emerson as the full backs. Zouma and Silva should continue as the centre backs. Kante, and Mount will most likely continue in their midfield roles but Havertz should replace Jorginho. Kovacic could play in the Havertz’s place though with the German making an impact from the bench. Pulisic and Werner should be our wingers with Giroud replacing Tammy up front to keep things fresh. There should be plenty of depth on the bench to cause damage with potentially Havertz, Kova, Jorginho, Tammy, Gilmour, and Hudson-Odoi all available. From minute 1 Chelsea need to stamp their authority on the game and be clinical in front of goal and with our chances. If it were up to me though I would play Pulisic, Hudson-Odoi, and Werner as the front three. That is a pacy force that any team will find hard to handle.

Arsenal Team Preview

Partey is out, with Aubameyang and Martinelli also doubts for the game. Xhaka and Gabriel are back after suspensions due to red cards they received in previous games. Leno should return to goal after missing the Carabao Cup game while the 3 at the back should be Gabriel, Luiz, and Tierney. Maitland-Niles and Saka should continue as the wing backs with Ceballos and El-Neny in midfield. Pepe and willian should play either side of Lacazette. Arsenal and Arteta have their defensive style of football and they like to sit back and counter and while that may make Chelsea find creative avenues to beat them the defensive block should be broken down. Willian and Pepe can always be a threat while Lacazette is a good striker regardless of current form.

Starting XI Prediction

Chelsea and Arsenal is always a great game just because there are always narratives around it. From having Wenger and Mourinho at one point to now having Lampard and Arteta there are many moving threads to pick from. Top of the table clashes to a team fighting for the top 4 and a team trying to survive relegation. It’s going to be a fun game but as a Chelsea fan Chelsea have to take this game by collar and get a good win against Arsenal. It is time to end this tendency to help out charity cases and start pushing towards the top. COME ON CHELSEA!!!

Volland scored in the 2nd minute of the game to seal the win for Leverkusen but the home team will end the season in 5th and be playing Europa League football next season.
