Chelsea 1 vs. 1 Everton MW 17 Review

Not good enough.

Chelsea took on Everton for MW 17 of the Premier League season at Stamford Bridge amid what is massive wave of the Omicron virus as games are getting called off with rapid pace. Everton had a bare bones side with many first team players missing while Chelsea still fielded a very strong starting XI. Mendy was in goal with a back three of Azpilicueta, Silva, and Rudiger. James, and Alonso started as the wing backs with Jorginho, and Loftus-Cheek as the midfielders. Mount, Ziyech, and Pulisic started up front. Pulisic started as the false 9 because Hudson-Odoi, Havertz, Werner, and Lukaku all missed the game due to testing positive and in the case of Havertz not feeling well. Kovacic, and Chilwell remained out as well. Not ideal but good enough to win this game.

The first half was all Chelsea as we dominated the game in possession having more than 80% of it and in chances having 13 shots with several on target. None ended up in the net though and apart from some great buildup play and skill moves we had nothing to show for the domination at half time. In these games the more the opposition hold on in the game the more hope they gain but Chelsea finally got a break through in the 70th minute after Reece James played in Mason Mount who smashed the ball past Pickford. Gone are the days though when Chelsea could hold on to a 1-0 lead and this festive season has opened up the defensive gates as Everton equalised in the 74th minute via Branthwaite. Chelsea could not find the winner as the two teams shared the points.

Chelsea Team Review

No clean sheet for Mendy once again as we drop points. Really did not have much to do in the game and goal conceded was a set piece error. Not much more to say.

No clean sheet for the defence as well. Rudiger was lively once again while James was a constant threat. Alonso was quiet and didn’t do much. Chalobah did come in the latter stages. The goal conceded was  a set piece error.

Jorginho, and Loftus-Cheek did well in the 1st half and for much of the 2nd half but there were no goals to show for their domination of the midfield. Mount did well and got the goal but should have had 2 or 3. Saul came on in the 2nd half and was at fault for the goal that was conceded. Barkley also came on but had little impact.

Ziyech looked good during the game and was positive. The Moroccan looks like he is finally fully fit and is playing with the type of style that we saw at Ajax. Pulisic was forced to play false 9 and pulled a shift but didn’t have much impact.

Some online were blaming Tuchel for the goal because he brought on Saul. That is really missing the key point though. The fact is that Tuchel fielded the strongest possible XI and we should have scored and finish the game in the 1st half itself. The fact that we did not is not Tuchel’s fault. Add to that the fact that our defence is not dominant anymore and we really are looking at a rut.

Chelsea remain 3rd in the table and 8 points clear of 4th at the moment. We are now 3 points behind Liverpool though and 4 behind Man City as we drop away from the top two for now. No need to panic but we clearly need to resolve our issues. Next up is a trip to Wolves which will not be easy and hopefully our missing players are back soon. COME ON CHELSEA!!!
