Weekend Football Preview

Some big big games!

Premier League MW 9

Arsenal vs. Aston Villa

It’s 12th vs. 13th as Arsenal take on Villa. Arsenal are unbeaten in their last 5 but have drawn their last two as they take on a Villa side who have lost their last two. This is an evenly matched game with two evenly matched squads. The result could go either way and both teams need a win.

Crystal Palace vs. Newcastle

14th placed Palace have drawn their last 3 and have been unlucky to not have won those games. Newcastle sit 19th in the table and are one of the teams who have not won a single game this season. The Saudi era did not kick off with a great start last week and Palace is another tough test. Steve Bruce has since vacated the manager spot and Graeme Jones is the temporary manager for this game. Palace should look to win this game.

Leeds vs. Wolverhampton

17th placed Leeds have been no where near their best this season as they take on Wolves who sit 10th and have won their last three. Wolves started the season well but were missing that killer touch in front of goal which they have found in recent games. Leeds look off the pace and this will be another tough game for them. I expect goals from this game.

Everton vs. Watford

8th placed Everton are winless in their last two as they take on Watford who sit 16th and have lost their last two as well. The Ranieri era did not get off to a great start against Spurs last weekend and Everton will hope to return to winning ways against this Watford team. Everton should win this game.

Southampton vs. Burnley

Southampton sit 15th and finally won their first game last weekend as they take on Burnley who sit 18th and are still winless in the league this season. Southampton are on the ascendency and should beat a Burnley side who are struggling for any kind of momentum.

Brighton vs. Man City

4th vs. 3rd and who would have thought that Brighton would be heading into this game as top four challengers. Brighton have drawn their last three after their blistering start to the season while Man City are switching between draws and wins at the moment. Based on the current City trend and Brighton’s trend this game has draw written all over it. Could Brighton get more than a draw? Maybe, but a point would be a great one for them as well.

West Ham vs. Tottenham

7th placed West Ham take on 5th placed Spurs who after their recent poor form find themselves back in the mix after two successive wins. West Ham are switching between wins and losses at the moment and based on the current trend they are due for a loss in this game. It’s a fiery London Derby between the two teams and I expect goals and tension.

Brentford vs. Leicester

9th placed Brentford take on 11th placed Leicester in another great game. Brentford were unlucky to not get something out of the game against Chelsea last weekend but Edouard Mendy had a magical game for the Blues. Leicester thrashed United last weekend and will be buoyed by the result heading into this game. Two teams with good philosophies and great tempo, the result could go either way.

Man United vs. Liverpool

The big game on Super Sunday, 6th placed United take on 2nd placed Liverpool as the historic rivalry continues. United lost in dismal fashion last weekend against Leicester and were heading for a loss against Atalanta mid week before they had their customary 45 minutes in the 2nd half. Liverpool have been doing really well but haven’t really turned up against teams in the top half of the table and struggled to beat Atletico during the week as well. This has all the ingredients for the game to be a draw and Ole will be hoping for that as well. Klopp would love to beat United so this game should be a fiery one for sure.

La Liga MW 10

Valencia take on Mallorca, Villarreal travel to Bilbao, Sevilla take on Levante, Barcelona play Real Madrid, and Atletico take on Real Sociedad. Some big games at the top half of the La Liga table but none bigger than the Clasico. The first Clasico in a long time without Ronaldo, and Messi. It will take some getting used to but the rivalry will continue and it will be interesting to see who gets the first win in the new era. Real Sociedad also lead the pack and it will be interesting to see whether they can create a gap on the rest of the teams.

Serie MW 9

Milan travel to Bologna, Atalanta take on Udinese, Lazio travel to Verona, Roma take on Napoli, and Inter take on Juventus. A jam packed Sunday in Italy this weekend as a struggling Roma take on leaders Napoli. Roma and Mourinho suffered a big loss against Bodo/Glimt during the week and Mourinho made some fiery comments after which he needs to bounce back from with a win. Spalletti though has got his Napoli team playing well and they have not dropped any points this season. Inter also take on Juventus while Milan will be looking to win their game and gain a lead on the others.

Bundesliga MW 9

Furth take on Leipzig, Dortmund take on Arminia, Wolfsburg take on Freiburg, Bayern take on Hoffenheim, Monchengladbach travel to Hertha Berlin, and Leverkusen travel to Koln. Bayern have a one point lead on the rest and I expect that to continue to grow in the coming games. I expect a win for most of the teams during this weekend, there is potential for some speed bumps though.

Ligue MW 11

Lille take on Brest, Lyon travel to Nice, Monaco welcome Montpellier, and PSG travel to Marseille. PSG sit 9 points clear and have already won the league in my view. The question is whether the big teams listed above can qualify for Europe because they have all started extremely poorly this season. PSG haven’t even performed at their level yet which is laughable.
