Weekend Football Preview

Serie A joins the fray!

Premier League MW 2

Liverpool vs. Burnley

Liverpool had a comfortable win at Norwich to begin the season while Burnley lost to Brighton. Liverpool sit 3rd in the table while Burnley are 12th and I think it will be another loss for Sean Dyche and co. Liverpool are playing their first home game at a packed Anfield since the pandemic began and they never got the chance to celebrate their title which means that the Kop will be at it’s boisterous best. Liverpool could win this by quite a few goals.

Aston Villa vs. Newcastle

11th vs. 15th as two teams that lost on the opening weekend go head to head. Villa almost mustered a comeback against Watford while Newcastle succumbed to a second half onslaught by West Ham. Villa are playing their first home game of the season and that will be a positive for them. I expect Villa to win but Newcastle will make it an interesting game.

Crystal Palace vs. Brentford

A second London derby for Brentford but this time they head to Selhurst Park to play Palace who lost to Chelsea and also play their 2nd London derby. Brentford beat Arsenal and sit 6th in the league while Palace are 18th. Patrick Vieira’s first home game and the fans will be at their supportive best but if Brentford can get an early goal the atmosphere could turn. Just based on the opening weekend Brentford should win this game.

Leeds vs. Everton

Leeds were thrashed by Man United last weekend while Everton pulled off a very good comeback against Southampton. Leeds are going to be playing their first home game in front of their fans since they were promoted last season and its going to be loud. Leeds is a harsh place to go to when the fans are there and Everton will feel the pressure. This could be a very fun game and you can expect goals. The result could go either way but I think Leeds will win.

Man City vs. Norwich

Man City started the season with a loss at Spurs while Norwich lost to Liverpool. City are the champions and the Etihad will be rocking to show their support in the first home game while also cheering on Grealish. Norwich will find it tough and will have to play out of their socks to get even a point. City should win this game comfortably.

Brighton vs. Watford

Brighton came back to win last weekend while Watford held on for their win. Brighton play their first home game back but Watford have a strong defensive record and it will be interesting to see how they fare away from home. Two opposing styles but Brighton are an entertaining team and this game should involve a few goals. I expect a tight game.

Southampton vs. Man United

Southampton lost to Everton while United thrashed Leeds. This fixture last year saw Southampton take a 2-0 half time lead before Cavani turned it around in the 2nd half. United also thrashed Southampton at Old Trafford with 9 goals. Southampton are going to be up against it for sure and United will probably win but one thing Southampton will have at their side are their fans. An upset could be on the cards but the home crowd would have to make these Southampton players play at their best.

Wolverhampton vs. Tottenham

Wolves lost their first game and this time Spurs who beat City visit the Molineux with Nuno returning to his old club. Tottenham lost during the week to Pacos in the European Conference League and the cloud of Harry Kane still hovers over the team. This could actually be a close game and Wolves can take a point or more but on paper Spurs are the favourites without a doubt.

West Ham vs. Leicester

Two teams that will be aiming for those European spots go head to head on Monday. West Ham did brilliantly against Newcastle but conceded a few while Leicester fought hard for their win against Wolves. This will be a close game and I don’t expect many goals. The result can go either way.

La Liga MW 2

Valencia travel to Granada, Villarreal travel to Espanyol, Barcelona travel to Bilbao, Atletico take on Elche, Real travel to Levante, Sevilla travel to Getafe. All these teams expect Villarreal won their opening game so I expect the same this weekend as well. Barcelona and Villarreal have the toughest fixture while Sevilla’s trip to Getafe is a tricky one as well. Barcelona are looking good without Messi based on one game while Real are looking exciting and fit under Ancelotti.

Serie MW 1

Serie A has suffered financially due to Covid with Inter being ravaged in the summer. Inter went from the high of becoming champions to losing Conte, Hakimi, and Lukaku as they head into the new season. Politano and Candreva have also left along with Mario, Nainggolan, Young and Darmian. In have come Simone Inzaghi as the manager with Dumfries, Darmian, Calhanoglu, and Dzeko coming in to name a few. Inter still have a decent squad that can compete for the title, they are still looking to get a forward in with Thuram and Zapata being the targets.

Local rivals AC Milan have had a busy window as well with Tomori, and Tonali coming in on a permanent after successful loan spells. Maignan has come in to replace Donnarumma while Ballo-Toure, Diaz and Giroud have also joined the club. There are rumours that Bakayoko could also join on loan. It’s been a decent window and Giroud adds to their list of top tier forwards at the club. Milan want to challenge for the title and have Champions League football to deal with as well.

Atalanta have brought in Demiral to replace Romero who left the club to join Spurs. Other than that there have been no major outgoings at the club. Juventus have brought back Allegri to manage the club replacing Pirlo while Kaio Jorge, and Locatelli have also signed on. Juventus want to become challengers again after what was a poor season. Spalletti is the new coach at Napoli as they try to challenge for a top four spot this season. Sarri has joined Lazio and has brought in Anderson, Pedro, Hysaj amongst others. It will be interesting to see how Sarriball fairs in Rome.  Their local rivals Roma have brought in the one and only Jose Mourinho as he makes a return to Italian football. In have come Tammy Abraham, Shomurodov, Vina, Patricio, and Ibanez. There have been quite a few outgoings as well. Out of the newly promoted teams Venezia a club from Venice is probably the one that catches the eye.

Serie A is going to be an open race this season and an entertaining one at that. Inter take on Genoa, Lazio travel to Empoli, Atalanta travel to Torino, Juventus travel to Udinese, Roma take on Fiorentina, Napoli take on Venezia, and Milan travel to Sampdoria. I think many people should watch Serie A this season not least if you are Chelsea fan it should be one hell of a season.

Bundesliga MW 2

Leipzig take on Stuttgart, Dortmund travel to Freiburg, Leverkusen take on Monchengladbach, and Bayern welcome Koln. The Bundesliga began in usual fashion last weekend with teams like Dortmund doing well but Bayern faltering. Bayern won the Super Cup at the weekend against Dortmund and should return to winning ways in the league as well. Dortmund will want to bounce back from the loss. As ever the Bundesliga is Bayern’s to lose.

Ligue MW 3

Brest take on PSG, Monaco take on Lens, Lille travel to St.Etienne, Lyon welcome Clermont, and Marseille travel to Nice. Angers, Clermont, and PSG are the only teams to have won the first two games and it will be interesting to see who makes it 3/3. PSG are doing well and haven’t even brought out their shiny new players with Messi being the gem. It’s anyone’s guess if Messi gets game time but just like Germany the league is PSG’s to lose even though Lille are the reigning champions.
