Football This Week – 1

A crazy crazy week in football.

Harry Kane a no show for Spurs training

Tottenham Hotspur 28 year old striker Harry Kane failed to show up for training on Monday and it was clear that this was a step to force a transfer away from the club. Kane is one of the best strikers in the world but at 28 he hasn’t won any trophies at club level. Even Gerrard had a Champions League to his name. It doesn’t help that Spurs are run by Daniel Levy who is very hard to do deals with. Manchester City are the only club who can afford Harry Kane but any deal will be well above 100 million pounds and there by be a British and Premier League record fee. Harry Kane has since returned to training or is due to return but there is a crack in his image now and while this transfer can drag on I think eventually Kane will leave for City.

Jack Grealish signs for Man City for 100 million pounds

Aston Villa attacking midfielder Jack Grealish sealed his transfer to Manchester City this week as well. The 100 million fee is a British and Premier League transfer record. Villa really wanted to keep Grealish but it seems that he had a clause in his deal set at a 100 million for Champions League clubs. Villa have done well in trying to replace him by buying Buendia, Ings, and Bailey three very good players. Grealish joins an already stacked Manchester City as their new no 10 but there is going to be a period where he will need to adapt from being the main man to being one of the main men.

Messi to leave Barcelona

This was the biggest news of the week and probably of the years as Barcelona announced that they will no be able to extend Messi’s contract at the club and he will be leaving. Barcelona have run themselves into financial ruin and it’s a hole that they have dug themselves into over several seasons. Messi’s contract ended last season and while Barcelona and him had agreed a new contract La Liga regulations and financial rules meant that they could not extend it. Simply put there is no money. It is a tragic day because everyone knows what Messi means to Barcelona and even La Liga. Messi will have his farewell press conference on Sunday and then will be heading to Paris to play for PSG. PSG have managed to find a way to evade financial fair play and add him to their attack of Mbappe and Neymar. Let’s be honest PSG is going to be a peaceful retirement home for Messi where he will occasionally have to play the Champions League game but will never need to challenge himself. A sad day for football but a day which also outlines how badly Barcelona have been run and how much work needs to be done at the club.
