Weekend Football Preview

Penultimate weekend!

Premier League MW 36

Newcastle vs. Man City

16th placed Newcastle have the honour of welcoming newly crowned Premier League champions Man City to St.James Park for their first games as Champions. City lost to Chelsea last weekend but United’s loss during the week meant that they sealed the title. City can now extend their lead to 13 points with a win. Newcastle are safe and are now aiming to finish as high as possible. A game of no real consequence. Man City won the reverse fixture 2-0.

Burnley vs. Leeds

Burnley are 15th in the table as they take on Leeds who sit 10th in the table. Both teams have 2 wins in their last 5 and Burnley are safe and are now hoping to finish as high as possible. Leeds can mathematically still finish as high as 6th so there is plenty to fight for for Bielsa and co. A Conference league position would also be a big win for them. Big game for Leeds. Leeds beat Burnley 1-0 in the reverse fixture.

Southampton vs. Fulham

Southampton sit 14th and are looking to finish as high as possible as they take on Fulham who are relegated and are looking to end the season with some positive momentum. A nothing game really but a matter of pride for both teams. The reverse fixture was a 0-0 draw.

Brighton vs. West Ham

Brighton are safe and have no pressure of relegation as they sit 17th in the table. West Ham sit 6th and can go back into 5th and within 3 points of 4th with a win. West Ham have lost 3 of their last 5 and have to win their last 3 games if they want to stand any chance of finishing in the top 6. A big game for the Hammers and Moyes. The reverse fixture was a 2-2 draw.

Crystal Palace vs. Aston Villa

Palace sit 13th having lost 4 of their last 5 while Villa sit 11th and can also mathematically finish as high as 6th but they have to find some positive form having only won 1 of 5. More to gain for Villa while Palace probably just want to end the season positively. Villa won the reverse fixture 3-0.

Tottenham vs. Wolverhampton

7th placed Tottenham can still mathematically finish in the top 4 but a lot would have to go their way. Wolves sit 12th and can finish as high as 10th so not much to play for but positive momentum to end the season. Big game for Spurs. The reverse fixture was a 1-1 draw.

West Brom vs. Liverpool

19th placed West Brom take on 5th placed Liverpool who could go within a point of 4th placed Chelsea with a win. Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 5-6 games and are looking to finish in the top four with 3 relatively easy fixtures remaining. West Brom have pride to fight for but not much else. The reverse fixture was a 1-1 draw.

Everton vs. Sheffield United

Everton can mathematically finish in the top four but their actual goal will be to get into the top 6. Everton have stumbled a bit though and this is a big game for them against Sheffield United. Sheffield United are bottom and just trying to end the season with some sort of positivity. Everton won the reverse fixture 0-1.

La Liga MW 37

Penultimate weekend in La Liga. Real Madrid travel to Athletic Bilbao for what is a must win game. Sevilla travel to Villarreal with no realistic chance of winning the title but they can finish as high as possible in the top four. Atletico take on Osasuna knowing that a win would take them one step closer and if Real and Barcelona even draw their games then Simeone and co are Champions of Spain. Barcelona take on Celta Vigo in a must win game. All eyes on La Liga and the great thing is that all the game’s kick off at the same time on Sunday. Big weekend.

Serie MW 37

Atalanta travel to Genoa, Juventus take on Inter Milan, Roma take on Lazio, Napoli travel to Fiorentina, and Milan welcome Cagliari. It’s must win games for all the teams chasing top four especially Juventus. A loss for Juventus and wins for Atalanta, Milan, and Napoli would mean that Juventus miss out on top four. Lazio also need to win if they want to stand any chance of finishing 5th in the table. A big weekend for the top four race in Italy.

Bundesliga MW 33

Frankfurt travel to Schalke, Leverkusen take on Union Berlin, Bayern travel to Freiburg as champions, Dortmund travel to Mainz, and Leipzig take on Wolfsburg. It’s the race for top four in Germany as well with Leipzig and Bayern having already sealed 2 of the 4 spots. Leipzig’s 2nd place is in doubt though. Wolfsburg can go within a point of Leipzig if they win while Dortmund can go above Wolfsburg if they win and Wolfsburg lose. Frankfurt also have a must win game because if Dortmund win and Frankfurt lose then the top four is sealed. A tight weekend ahead.

Ligue MW 37

Lyon travel to Nimes, PSG take on Reims, Lille take on St.Etienne, and Monaco take on Rennes. All four teams at the top of the table can still win the league although Lyon would need a swing of goal difference and would need all the teams above them to lose their remaining two games. Lille and Monaco face tough tests this weekend and PSG will be looking to take advantage of any dropped points. PSG though have been in dubious form recently themselves. To close to call.
