Weekend Football Preview

Big weekend of football!

Premier League MW 31

Fulham vs. Wolverhampton

18th placed Fulham have lost their last 3 while Wolves sit 14th in the table and haven’t won any of their last 5 games. Two teams that need a win, this weekend for different reasons. Fulham need to win to get out of the relegation zone while Wolves just need to get a positive feeling around the team. It should be a close game. Wolves got a 1-0 win in the reverse fixture.

Man City vs. Leeds

League leaders City take on 11th placed Leeds who have won their last two and are unbeaten in their last 3. Leeds are in good momentum but City should be a step too far for them. It’s going to be an entertaining game because both teams like to play high tempo football it could be a high scoring one as well but City should win this. The reverse fixture was a 1-1 draw.

Liverpool vs. Aston Villa

Liverpool have still only scored 1 goal at home this year and are winless at home as they take on Villa who sit 9th 5 points behind them. Liverpool can go into 4th with the win but having lost to Real Madrid it seems that there problems are not over. The reverse fixture was the massive 7-2 win for Villa and while Villa probably won’t score anywhere near that amount this time, I do see Villa getting something out of this game.

Burnley vs. Newcastle

15th placed Burnley are looking to bounce back from a defeat as they take on 17th placed Newcastle who have no wins in their last 5 but have only lost once. This should be a close game between two lacklustre sides. Newcastle won the reverse fixture 3-1.

West Ham vs. Leicester

A massive game in terms of top four as 4th placed West Ham take on 3rd placed Leicester. West Ham sit 4 points behind Leicester and a win for the Hammers would drag Leicester right into the top four race. A win for Leicester would create a good buffer for them. It’s all very close at the top. West Ham won the reverse fixture 0-3 and the Hammers will be hoping for a similar result.

Tottenham vs. Man United

Another big game in terms of the top four race. Tottenham sit 6th in the table and can go into 4th with the win while United are 9 points clear of 8th and have a slight buffer. A win for Spurs would ramp up the top four race and give United a slight worry but a win for United would all but seal their 2nd place especially if Leicester lose. It’s going to be a cagey affair for sure. Tottenham won the reverse fixture 1-6 and Spurs will be hoping for a similar performance.

Sheffield United vs. Arsenal

Bottom placed Sheffield United are 15 points from safety and all but relegated as they take on 10th placed Arsenal who are struggling themselves. It’s a game of no real consequence but it would be a good for either team if they won. Arsenal won the reverse fixture 2-1.

West Brom vs. Southampton

19th placed West Brom are 8 points from safety as they take on 13th placed Southampton who haven’t been great recently. West Brom beat Chelsea last weekend but Southampton will be a tougher affair mainly because Chelsea looked like a once in a while result. This should be a close game and could be a draw. Southampton won the reverse fixture 2-0.

Brighton vs. Everton

16th placed Brighton take on 8th placed Everton who are in a race for Europe at the moment. Everton dropped points last weekend but will know that a win in this game could see them gain an advantage over the teams above them. Brighton are looking to keep the distance from the relegation zone. Everton won the reverse fixture 4-2.

La Liga MW 30

Atletico travel to Real Betis and Sevilla travel to Celta Vigo but the biggest game of the weekend is the El Clasico as Real Madrid take on Barcelona. A win for Barcelona would send them top of the league and 5 points clear of Madrid if Atletico lose their game. A win for Madrid could send them level on points with Atletico and one above Barcelona if Atletico lose their game. It’s a massive game in terms of the title race and Atletico will be hoping both teams can draw and they win.

Serie MW 30

Milan travel to Parma, Inter take on Cagliari, Lazio travel to Verona, Juventus welcome Genoa, Napoli travel to Sampdoria, Roma take on Bologna, and Atalanta travel to Fiorentina. Inter are 11 points clear as they look to maintain or increase that gap while the rest also have winnable games. It’s an egg shell weekend in Italy and it will be interesting to see if any of the teams unexpectedly slip up.

Bundesliga MW 28

Leipzig travel to Werder Bremen, Monchengladbach travel to Hertha Berlin, Bayern welcome Union Berlin, Dortmund travel to Stuttgart, Frankfurt welcome Wolfsburg and Leverkusen take on Hoffenheim. Bayern are 7 points clear and the title is all but sealed for the Champions once again. Leipzig are looking to keep their 2nd place while Wolfsburg sit 3rd 4 points ahead of Frankfurt. A win for Wolfsburg would all but seal 3rd for them while a win for Frankfurt would open up the race between the two. Dortmund are 7 points outside the top four and need Frankfurt to lose to stand any chance. The same goes for Leverkusen. Monchengladbach are within distance of the Europa League.

Ligue MW 32

Lille travel to Metz, PSG travel to Strasbourg, Monaco welcome Dijon, and Lyon take on Angers. It’s all ver close at the top of Ligue 1 as Lille have a 3 point gap over PSG. Monaco and Lyon are within touching distance as well. Not the toughest weekend on paper for these teams but it will be interesting to see if any team slips up.
