Weekend Football Preview

Big games at the top!

Premier League MW 24

Leicester vs. Liverpool

3rd vs. 4th as Leicester take on Liverpool in a big game. Rodgers faces his old side as Liverpool are struggling to get wins and could suffer a 3rd straight defeat in the league. It would leave Liverpool 6 points behind Leicester and possibly see them drop as low as 6th if results don’t go their way. A win for Liverpool would keep them right up there in terms of a top four race. It’s going to be an entertaining game between two teams in decent form. Liverpool won the reverse fixture 3-0.

Crystal Palace vs. Burnley

13th placed Palace take on 17th placed Burnley with both teams looking to return to winning ways. Palace are looking at reaching the top 10 while Burnley are just aiming for survival at the moment. It should be a close game but Burnley need to bounce back after some poor results. The reverse fixture was a 1-0 win for Burnley.

Man City vs. Tottenham

League leaders City can go 17th points clear of 8th placed Spurs with a game in hand if they beat Mourinho and co in this game. Spurs finally ended a poor run by beating West Brom but then lost to Everton in the FA Cup as they continue to struggle. City look imperious at the moment and while it may be tough to break down Spurs we all know it’s going to be attack against defence. An interesting game but in terms of top four it’s a must not lose for Tottenham. Tottenham beat Man City 2-0 in the reverse fixture although City were struggling at that time.

Brighton vs. Aston Villa

15th placed Brighton take on 9th placed Villa with the Seagulls flying high in good form unbeaten in their last 5 games. Villa are also in decent form and with both teams playing attacking football this should be a fun watch for neutrals. Villa are still aiming for a top 7 finish while Brighton are looking to maintain their course away from the relegation zone. Brighton won the reverse fixture 1-2.

Southampton vs. Wolverhampton

Southampton sit 12th in the table as they take on 14th placed Wolves. Southampton have not won or drawn a league game in some time while Wolves have only 1 win in their last 5 games. Southampton did beat Wolves in the FA Cup during the week while the reverse fixture was a 1-1 draw. Southampton need to return to winning ways if they want to stand any chance of finishing in the top half of the table.

West Brom vs. Man United

19th placed West Brom are struggling as they sit 11 points from safety, and take on 2nd placed United this weekend who have 2 wins in their last 5 games. United should win this comfortably but Allardyce is known to like playing against the bigger teams and it will be interesting to see what happens. The reverse fixture was a 1-0 win for United so a draw isn’t entirely out of the realm of possibility.

Arsenal vs. Leeds

11th placed Arsenal take on 10th placed Leeds with the away team 1 point above the Gunners. Leeds are in good form while Arsenal haven’t won any of their last 3 games. The reverse fixture was a 0-0 draw so the result could go either way.

Everton vs. Fulham

18th placed Fulham take on 7th placed Everton with Everton looking to enter the top four, or at least get closer to it. Fulham sit 8 points above from safety and need to get a win to cut that gap and create a realistic chance of survival. Everton have been conceding a lot of goals recently but are also scoring several. Fulham have been good and perhaps unlucky to not win some recent games. It should be an interesting fixture. The reverse fixture was a 2-3 win for Everton.

West Ham vs. Sheffield United

6th placed West Ham have their eyes set at moving closer to the top four as they take on bottom of the table Sheffield United who have according to recent form should win this game. West Ham won the reverse fixture 0-1 and probably should win this game as well but there is a possibility of dropping points.

La Liga MW 23

Atletico travel to Granada, Sevilla take on Huesca, Barcelona welcome Alaves, Real Sociedad travel to Getafe, Real Madrid entertain Valencia and Villarreal take on Real Betis. Atletico remain in the driving seat at the moment with 2 games in hand while the rest play catch up. The gap isn’t too large at the moment as it stands at 5 points but the teams below Atletico cannot afford to drop any further points.

Serie MW 22

Napoli take on Juventus, Milan travel to Spezia, Roma welcome Udinese, Atalanta travel to Cagliari, and Inter take on Lazio in some interesting fixtures in Italy this weekend. Some of the results could be favourable to Milan and Roma if they win their games. Spezia are no pushovers though while Udinese are a tricky team as well.

Bundesliga MW 21

Leipzig already beat Augsburg 2-1 on Friday night, Dortmund take on Hoffenheim, Leverkusen take on Mainz, Frankfurt take on Koln, Monchengladbach travel to Wolfsburg, and newly crowned Club World Champions Bayern take on Arminia. Bayern are cruising in the league at the moment and if they win this it would maintain their 7 point lead. The rest really need to start winning especially Dortmund.

Ligue MW 25

PSG take on Nice, Lyon welcome Montpellier, Monaco play Lorient, and Lille take on Brest. It’s all very close at the top of Ligue 1 with all four of these bigger teams in the race for the title. PSG need to do some catching up though while Lille stay ahead by a bit.
