Weekend Football Preview

Big big weekend of games!

Premier League MW 23

Aston Villa vs. Arsenal

A massive game to start the weekend as 9th placed Villa take on 10th placed Arsenal with a point separating the two teams. Villa actually have 2 games in hand as well but those don’t matter until they play them. The two teams lost during the week and both will be looking to bounce back. Arsenal will be without Luiz, and Leno which leaves their defence struggling. Villa should win this game with Arsenal struggling. Villa beat Arsenal 0-3 in the reverse fixture.

Burnley vs. Brighton

17th placed Burnley have lost their last 2 as they take on 15th placed Brighton who are unbeaten in their last 4. Its a big game at the bottom of the table with both teams clear of the relegation zone at the moment. Burnley have got some good results over the last month but Brighton have been consistently good and beat Spurs and Liverpool in the last 2 games. Its an interesting one for sure. The reverse fixture was a 0-0 draw.

Newcastle vs. Southampton

Newcastle sit 16th in the table and our struggling with 1 win in their last 5 while Southampton have lost their last 4 with their last loss being a 9-0 defeat. These two teams have to bounce back and get a win especially Southampton, let’s see if Hassenhutl can come back from such a heavy defeat a 2nd season in a row. The reverse fixture was a 2-0 win for Southampton.

Fulham vs. West Ham

London derby time as Fulham welcome West Ham. Fulham sit 18th in the table while West Ham sit 5th and on the verge of entering the top four. Moyes has done a great job this season while Fulham haven’t won a game for some time. Fulham have had some good results against better teams this season though and a surprise is always on the cards but West Ham in the form that they are in should win this game. West Ham won the reverse fixture 1-0.

Man United vs. Everton

2nd placed United welcome 7th placed Everton as they look to continue on from their 9-0 win. United had been playing poorly prior to that game so there is hope for Everton who themselves have done well this season. A win for Everton would bring United back into the race for top four as the 8 point deficit would be cut down to 5. If United win though they could move level on points with City who face Liverpool this weekend. A game that can go either way. Man United won the reverse fixture 1-3.

Tottenham vs. West Brom

Tottenham sit 8th in the table having lost their last 3 as they take on West Brom who sit 19th and who also have only 1 win in their last 5. Two teams struggling at two different ends of the table but with similar form over their last 5 games. On paper one would think that Tottenham should win this game but it will be tough as West Brom under Allardyce like to sit back and defend and they do like playing the bigger teams. It will be a tough watch for the neutrals but Spurs should get a win. Spurs won the reverse fixture 0-1.

Wolverhampton vs. Leicester

14th placed Wolves finally managed to win a game as they beat Arsenal during the week while Leicester sit 3rd and are looking to move higher up the table. Two teams that were close to each other last season but while Leicester have continued that form Wolves have dropped off mainly due to some key injuries. Leicester are also missing some big players though. Leicester should win this game on current form especially since it took Arsenal to go down to 10 men for Wolves to look dominant in that game. Leicester won the reverse fixture 1-0.

Liverpool vs. Man City

Over the last couple of seasons this would have been a title decider and it probably still is in a way. Liverpool are struggling at the moment and a loss to Brighton after two wins brought them right back down to earth. A loss against City could see them drop into 5th and be 10 points behind City with Pep having a game in hand. Liverpool’s defensive problems stand out but for me it’s the attack that is struggling as they failed to score yet again. City haven’t conceded since GW 9 and that just shows that there isn’t much hope for Klopp and co. Still big teams turn up for big games and this will be a firecracker for sure. The reverse fixture was a 1-1 draw.

Leeds vs. Crystal Palace

11th placed Leeds take on 13th placed Palace with the two teams level on points. Palace have returned to winning ways in recent games while Leeds have been inconsistent as one can never know which Leeds team will turn up. This should be an open game to watch with both teams looking to move up the table at this point. The reverse fixture was a 4-1 win for Palace.

La Liga MW 22

Real Madrid travel to Huesca with Hazard once again out injured with a muscle injury. Villarreal travel to Elche, Sevilla entertain Getafe, Real Sociedad take on Cadiz, Barcelona travel to Real Betis, and Atletico take on Celta Vigo. Atletico are 10 points clear with 2 games in hand at the moment as they look unstoppable. Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Sevilla make up the top four with neither team able to stay consistent.

Serie MW 21

Inter travel to Fiorentina, Atalanta take on Torino, Juventus welcome Roma, Napoli travel to Genoa, Milan take on Crotone, and Lazio entertain Cagliari. Some interesting games in Italy this weekend but one would expect Milan to increase their lead at the top with Inter and Juventus facing tough games. Roma themselves are sitting 3rd and in the mix at the moment while rest are close.

Bundesliga MW 20

Bayern travel to Hertha Berlin, Dortmund travel to Freiburg, Schalke entertain Leipzig, Leverkusen welcome Stuttgart, Monchengladbach take on Koln, and Frankfurt travel to Hoffenheim. Bayern are 7 points clear at the top of the table and unlike several of the other leagues in Europe they have bucked the trend and maintained their dominance other than the fact that the rest of the teams have been poor. Bayern need to start losing for this league to take an interesting turn.

Ligue MW 24

Lyon welcome Strasbourg, Monaco travel to Nimes, Lille travel to Nantes, and PSG travel to Marseille. Ligue 1 has been pretty tight at the top of the table and its actually a league to keep an eye on after a very long time. Ordinarily PSG playing Marseille would be a big deal but Marseille are a club in turmoil at the moment after fan riots and Villas Boas stepping down as manager and so they would do well to even get a point from this game.
