Weekend Football Review

Not the best week for the Big 6. 

Premier League MW 12

Leeds 1 vs. 2 West Ham

Klich scored a penalty in the 6th minute to give Leeds the lead but West Ham fought back. Soucek equalised in the 25th minute and Ogbonna scored in the 80th minute to seal the win for Moyes. Leeds are going through a rough patch at the moment as they sit 14th in the table while West Ham and Moyes continue to improve and they rise up to 6th in the table. 

Wolverhampton 0 vs. 1 Aston Villa

The game was a stalemate until the final 5 minutes where the game went alive. Luiz was sent off for Villa in the 85th minute but Villa got the lead in the 94th minute through El Ghazi. Moutinho then got a red card in the 95th minute for Wolves, as Villa sealed 3 points. Wolves drop down to 13th in the table while Villa climb up to 10th in the table. 

Newcastle 2 vs. 1 West Brom

Almiron scored in the 1st minute to give Newcastle the lead, while Furlong equalised in the 50th minute for West Brom. Gayle though scored the winner in the 82nd minute for Newcastle. Newcastle move one place up to 12th while West Brom remain 19th in the table. 

Man United 0 vs. 0 Man City

A derby that didn’t love up to the expectation, both teams were happy to see out the draw. United were happy to sit back and counter while City didn’t take the risk to go and get the 3 points. United drop down to 8th while City drop down to 9th. 

Southampton 3 vs. 0 Sheffield United

Adams scored in the 1st half while Armstrong and Redmond scored in the 2nd half. Southampton are flying high at the moment as they climb up to 4th in the table with Hassenhutl making them play well. Sheffield United remain winless in the league and now sit 8 points from safety. 

Crystal Palace 1 vs. 1 Tottenham

Kane scored in the 23rd minute as it looked like it would be business as usual for Spurs. In a sense it was as Tottenham sat back and chose to defend the lead against Palace. The Eagles were the better team in the 2nd half and Schlupp scored in the 81st minute to equalise and get a point. Palace remain 11th in the table while Tottenham remain top of the table on goal difference. 

Fulham 1 vs. 1 Liverpool

Fulham must have been motivated by their London neighbours in Palace as the fought hard and got a point against Liverpool in a game that Fulham should have won. Fulham were denied a clear penalty in the 1st half but managed to gain the lea through Reid in the 25th minute. Fulham could have had several more in the 1st half but Liverpool managed to limit it to 1. Liverpool came out for the 2nd half and were rewarded a penalty in the 79th minute which Salah converted. Fulham managed to get a massive point though but move one place down into 18th a point from safety. Liverpool remain 2nd on goal difference. 

Arsenal 0 vs. 1 Burnley

Two teams struggling to get a win and a relegation game as well as Arsenal had to win in front of fans at the Emirates but it didn’t turn out that way. Arsenal were poor for 45 minutes but came out in the 2nd half with a boost as they played well for 10 minutes. Xhaka was then sent off for Arsenal in the 56th minute for grabbing a players neck while Burnley gained the lead in the 73rd minute via an Aubameyang own goal. Arsenal suffer another defeat as they remain 15th 5 points form the relegation zone. Burnley climb out of the relegation zone and into 17th a point above the relegation zone. 

Leicester 3 vs. 0 Brighton

Maddison scored 2 while Vardy scored the other in a quick fire 1st half and win for Leicester. Leicester move back into 3rd with the win and a point from the top while Brighton remain 16th but now just 2 points from the relegation zone. 

La Liga MW 13

Valencia drew with Bilbao 2-2, Sevilla beat Getafe 0-1, Real Madrid beat Atletico 2-0, Sociedad drew with Eibar 1-1, and Barcelona beat Levante 1-0. The big winners turn out to be Real Madrid who manage to have a good week of results in some tough games. Real Sociedad remain top of the table on goal difference while Atletico, Real Madrid, and Villarreal make up the top four. Sevilla sit 5th in the table while Barcelona are 8th and Valencia are 11th. 

Serie MW 11

Lazio lost to Verona 1-2, Inter beat Cagliari 1-3, Napoli beat Sampdoria 2-1, Atalanta beat Fiorentina 3-0, Roma beat Bologna 1-5, Juventus beat Genoa 1-3, and Milan did well to come back and draw against Parma 2-2. A good weekend for all the top teams in Italy as they gain some ground on Milan. Milan stay clear at the top by 3 points while Inter, Napoli, and Juventus make up the top four. Roma sit 6th while Atalanta sit 8th and Lazio sit 9th. 

Bundesliga MW 11

Stuttgart thrashed Dortmund 1-5 which resulted in Favre getting sacked on Sunday. Leipzig beat Werder Bremen 2-0, Monchengladbach drew 1-1 with Hertha Berlin, Bayern drew 1-1 with Union Berlin, Schalke drew 2-2 with Augsburg, while Leverkusen beat Hoffenheim 4-1. Leverkusen climb to the top of the table as they open a 1 point lead. Bayern, Leipzig, and Wolfsburg make up the top four. Dortmund sit 5th while Monchengladbach sit 8th and Schalke sit bottom of the table. 

Ligue MW 14

Marseille beat Monaco 2-1, Lille beat Bordeaux 2-1, and PSG lost to Lyon 0-1. Lille move to the top of the table on goal difference with Lyon right behind them. PSG sit 3rd in the table while Marseille sit 4th. Monaco sit 6th in the table. The teams around PSG are doing well to make the title race in France interesting this season as the Parisiens struggle.
