Everton 1 vs. 0 Chelsea MW 12 Review

One of those nights…

Chelsea travelled to Goodison Park to play Everton on Saturday and returned to London with a 1-0 loss after what was a pretty sub standard performance. Lampard selected his best possible XI with Mendy in goal, Reece James, Silva, Zouma, and Chilwell in defence along with Kante, Mount, and Kovacic in midfield. Werner, Giroud, and Havertz started up front with Ziyech, and CHO out along with Pulisic rested due to precaution.

Chelsea started the game off well but it was evident from the get go that we lacked the creativity from the wings. Everton gained the lead in the 22nd minute after Mendy came out and brought down Calvert-Lewin. The proceeding penalty was converted by Sigurdsson. Everton then only defended for the rest of the game as Chelsea huffed and puffed but couldn’t break down the Toffees defence. It was essentially just one of those nights where Chelsea could have played for hours and we probably would not have scored.

Chelsea Team Review

No clean sheet for Mendy but a loss where he was at fault for the goal but nothing more than that. Pick yourself up and move along, other than that it was a good performance from the goalkeeper.

Reece James was the man of the match for Chelsea, a threat going forward he hit the post in the 1st half and was a constant outlet from crosses. Defensively he handled Richarlison well and kept the Brazilian quiet. Other than that the defence played well but no clean sheet.

The midfield was decent but the pressing was lacking as a whole. Mount didn’t have the impact although he did hit the post in the 2nd half while Kovacic had no space to make his marauding runs forward. Kante was his usual energetic self but with Everton defending it didn’t really make a difference.

Havertz had another sub par game but yet again he needs to time and also Covid has not helped him as he still looks to be recovering from that. Giroud had no surface from the wings while Werner had not space to make his runs. Tammy came on in the 2nd half and it just showed how we missed our wingers with all three of our strikers on the pitch.

Frustrating night for Lampard and he will know that he needs to pick up and move on. Make this result a blip and it’s a testament to the form that we have been in that we felt disappointment from the result. No worries.

Saturday night didn’t feel great just in the context of tables but performance wise it just felt like a game which we needed to forget and move on. The results on Sunday helped Chelsea fan’s feel better but we drop down to 5th 3 points behind Tottenham. Next up Wolves and a chance to bounce back. COME ON CHELSEA!!!
