Weekend Football Review

Big results!

Premier League MW 9

Aston Villa 1 vs. 2 Brighton

Brighton returned to winning ways as they beat an in form Villa team in Birmingham. Welbeck scored in the 12th minute but Konsa equalised for Villa in the 47th minute. March though scored the winner in the 56th minute and the Seagulls held onto the lead. Lamptey was sent off in the 91st minute after what was a very good performance at right back once again. Villa drop down to 7th while Brighton remain 16th but go clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham 2 vs. 0 Man City

For City to get something out of this game they had to score first and that’s exactly what they didn’t do. Son scored in the 5th minute to give Tottenham the lead and from then on it was attack against defence but Spurs never looked like they would concede. It was a typical Mourinho performance and Lo Celso came off the bench in the 65th minute to double the lead. The win takes Tottenham to the top of the table on goal difference and they will remain there for at least 7 days, the longest they have been on top ever. City drop down to 13th with the loss as Pep has some serious work to do.

Man United 1 vs. 0 West Brom

United made it 2 wins in a row with what was a far from convincing performance as they struggled to break down West Brom and got lucky as they received another penalty to save them. West Brom hit the post 3 times and were fairly unlucky to leave Manchester with no points. United climb up to 10th with the win while West Brom drop down to 19th with the loss.

Fulham 2 vs. 3 Everton

A high scoring game saw Everton return to winning ways against lowly Fulham as Ancelotti took a sigh of relief. Calvert-Lewin scored in the 1st minute to give Everton the lead but Bobby Reid equalised for Fulham in the 15th minute. Calvert-Lewin regained the lead in the 29th minute and Doucoure made it 3 in the 35th minute. Loftus-Cheek got one back for Fulham in the 70th minute and Fulham also missed a penalty but they couldn’t find that equaliser. Fulham drop down to 18th and into the relegation zone while Everton move into 6th with the win.

Sheffield United 0 vs. 1 West Ham

Haller scored in the 56th minute to give West Ham the win as Sheffield United continue to search for their first this season. Sheffield United remain bottom of the table and 4 points from safety now while West Ham move into 8th with the win.

Leeds 0 vs. 0 Arsenal

Leeds hit the post 3 times and Pepe was sent off for Arsenal in the 51st minute after a mild head butt as Arteta and team held on for a point. Arsenal were in the game until the red card but after that it was one way traffic for 40 minutes. Leeds climb into 14th with the win while Arsenal drop down into 12th with the point.

Liverpool 3 vs. 0 Leicester

Jonny Evans scored an own goal while Jota and Firmino added the rest as Liverpool dusted off injuries to beat Leicester comfortably at home. Liverpool have no depth on the bench but their starting XI was enough against Leicester while the Foxes once again fell short against a top team. Liverpool move into 2nd with the win level with Spurs while Leicester drop down to 4th 2 points behind Tottenham.

Burnley 1 vs. 0 Crystal Palace

Chris Wood scored in the 8th minute and it was enough for Burnley as they finally got a win to kick start their season. Palace were without Zaha who tested positive for Covid and so lost a key player. Burnley move out of the relegation zone into 17th while Palace drop down to 11th with the loss.

Wolverhampton 1 vs. 1 Southampton

Walcott scored in the 58th minute to give Southampton the lead but Neto equalised for Wolves in the 75th minute. Wolves remain 9th with the point while Southampton drop into 5th with the point.

La Liga MW 10

Real Madrid drew with Villarreal 1-1, Sevilla beat Celta Vigo 4-2, Atletico beat Barcelona 1-0, and Valencia drew with Alaves 2-2. Not a great weekend for Real and Barcelona but Atletico once again progress further. Real Sociedad are top of the league 3 points clear of 2nd placed Atletico while Villarreal and Real Madrid make up the top four. Sevilla are 7th in the table while Valencia are 9th and Barcelona are 13th having played 2 games less than others though. Not your usual La Liga season at the moment and seems like it’s going to be an interesting one.

Serie MW 8

Lazio beat Crotone 0-2, Atalanta drew with Spezia 0-0, Juventus beat Cagliari 2-0, Roma beat Parma 3-0, Inter came back to beat Torino 4-2, and AC Milan beat Napoli 1-3. Big wins for the big teams in Italy while Napoli and Atalanta take a step back. Milan stay top of the table with a 2 point lead while Sassuolo, Roma and Juventus make up the top four. Inter, Napoli, Atalanta, and Lazio sit 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th. A very interesting race in Italy is starting to take shape with Milan in the driving seat at the moment.

Bundesliga MW 8

Bayern drew with Werder Bremen 1-1, Leverkusen beat Arminia 1-2, Monchengladbach drew with Augsburg 1-1, Wolfsburg beat Schalke 0-2, Leipzig drew with Frankfurt 1-1, and Dortmund beat Hertha Berlin 2-5. A weekend of draws in Germany with Dortmund the big winners this weekend. Bayern Munich stay top of the table by a point while Dortmund, Leverkusen, and Leipzig make up the top four. Monchengladbach sit 7th while Schalke are bottom of the table. Beating Bayern for the title is the main aim of most teams this season and Haaland in the form that he is in might just help Dortmund make it a closer race than last season.

Ligue MW 11

Bordeaux beat Rennes 0-1, Monaco came back to beat PSG 3-2, Lyon beat Angers 0-1, and Lille beat Lorient 4-0. PSG remain top of the table as they sit 2 points clear, while Lille, Lyon and Montpellier make up the top four. Monaco and Marseille sit 5th and 6th while Rennes sit 7th. Catching up to PSG is the goal for most teams this season and Monaco will be thanked by the rest for beating the Champions.
