Burnley 0 vs. 3 Chelsea MW 7 Review

Very pleasing win!

Chelsea travelled to windy Turf Moor to play Burnley on Saturday and returned to London with three goals and a clean sheet. Burnley is a tough place to go to and only last week did Spurs struggle to beat them. Lampard selected a strong XI with Mendy in goal, and Reece James, Silva, Zouma and Chilwell as the defence. Kante, Havertz, Mount made up the midfield while Werner, Abraham, and Ziyech made up the attack. Pulisic was set to start but he felt a slight niggle in his hamstring during the warm up and so was removed from the lineup. Either way a strong XI and the 4-3-3 formation that many fans wanted to see more of. Burnley set up with their usual two banks of four and Barnes and Wood up top.

The game began with Chelsea dominating play but the best chance early on came to Burnley who saw Barnes go through on goal but his chip over an on rushing Mendy was too high and went off target. It served as a wake up call for Chelsea but we were still lacking that final pass as we connected play well. Our first goal came in the 26th minute as Werner went down the right wing and his cutback found Abraham who laid it on for Ziyech who’s left footed shot found the back of the net. A brilliant team goal and a league debut goal for Ziyech. The rest of the 1st half was much of the same as Burnley stayed strong at the back and Chelsea tried to break the defence down.

The 2nd half saw Chelsea shift into another gear as we pressed with more intent and barely let Burnley have a sight of the ball. The 2nd goal came in the 63rd minute via a corner as Mount’s found Zouma who thumped his header into the net. 3 goals in the league for Kurt and it was basically game over. Burnley decided they had to finally chase the game and so opened up and it allowed Chelsea more space. The 70th minute saw the 3rd goal as a wayward Burnley pass was cut out by Reece James who drove forward and found Ziyech in the middle. Ziyech played a beautiful pass into Werner who finessed it past Pope. The rest of the game saw Chelsea continue to dominate possession and better finishing in the final 3rd could have saw us get more goals. 3 is enough at Burnley though and a sign of progress for Chelsea.

Chelsea Team Review

Mendy get’s another clean sheet for Chelsea making it 4 in a row for the club. The sheer presence of Mendy in goal is a boost for our defence and his ability to latch onto crosses and set pieces was key against Burnley. Mendy really had nothing to do on Saturday and that would be thanks to our defence.

Brilliant back four once again. Zouma and Silva dominated Barnes, and Wood and rarely let them have a sniff on goal other than that early Barnes chance. Zouma also got another goal to his name which was great. Silva could have had one as well but Pope was well placed. Reece James and Chilwell were brilliant going forward but defensively they were always in position and didn’t allow any threat down the flanks. The last time we kept 4 clean sheets in a row in all comps was 4 season’s ago so this is a big accomplishment for our back four.

Kante played as a CDM with Mount and Havertz as 8’s and it was a complete performance by all three. Kante stayed back in this game and shielded the defence but Mount and Havertz also played their part defensively and actually made some brilliant tackles to stop Burnley attacks. Going forward Havertz and Mount were once again effortless and it was good to see Mount play in his favoured 8 role as well. I think the two could really make a partnership alongside each other. Kante also joined in on the fun going forward once the game looked done. The midfield had been a key problem over the last few games and taking this game in isolation it worked brilliantly mostly due to the fact that Havertz and Mount both defended and attacked with equal intensity.

Werner was going to be rested but had to come in for an injured Pulisic while Tammy started his first game in some time and Ziyech started his first game for Chelsea in the Premier League. The chemistry was good between the 3, Werner did well and pressed well and looked tired towards the end but he did get a goal to his name which will make him happy. Tammy’s linkup play was stand out and an assist for the opening goal will do him well. Abraham can still do better to anticipate passes because he still seems to be late into crosses etc. Ziyech was stand out in the attack as he drifted all over the pitch. Hakim dropped deep to receive the ball but also moved centrally to create play. The first goal was great finish while the pass for Werner was deft. Ziyech also had the intensity in pressing and his attitude on the pitch was great.

Another clean sheet and 3 goals to his team’s name will make Lampard a happy man in a game where it looked like Chelsea finally clicked for the first time. The attack was fluid the defence solid and the midfield was an engine in both those areas. Another first for Chelsea this season was how we pressed as a team and knew when to go into a Burnley player when to stay back. There was plenty to like and now Lampard will have to continue this momentum with the team.

Burnley haven’t won this season and so this win should be taken with a bit of patience but this Burnley team had also been playing well in recent games and are always hard to break down. Chelsea look like they are finally gaining some momentum and it’s still early stages but again there is plenty to be excited about. Chelsea move into 4th for now and next up is Rennes at Stamford Bridge, COME ON CHELSEA!!!
