Midweek Football Review

Straightforward in the Europa League.

Europa League Round of 16 Leg 2

Shakhtar Donetsk 3 (5) vs. (1) 0 Wolfsburg

Wolfsburg had it all to do in this game and they did nothing as the game was uneventful until the final 20 minutes. Khocholava was sent off for Shakhtar in the 67th minute and John Brooks was sent off for Wolfsburg in the 70th minute. The sending off seemed to hurt Wolfsburg more as they conceded 3 goals in the final 3 minutes. Moraes scored 2 and Solomon scored 1 for Shakhtar to take the Ukranian team to the quarter finals.

Copenhagen 3 (3) vs. (1) 1 Istanbul Basaksehir

Copenhagen had to score more than 1 and keep a clean sheet if they wanted to reach the next round and the Danish side did just that. Jonas Wind scored 2 while Falk scored the other as Copenhagen got a comfortable win against the Turkish champions. Copenhagen now reach the quarters while Istanbul can finally call an end to the 19/20 season.

Man United 2 (7) vs. (1) 1 LASK

United fielded a 2nd string team in a game they had all but qualified in but LASK took the match to the Red Devils. United had to stay strong in the 1st half as they could not get a grip of the game and LASK should have probably had a goal or two. LASK got the lead in the 55th minute through a brilliant goal from Wiesinger. It was short lived though as Lingard equalised 2 minutes later. Martial scored the winner in the 88th minute as United scraped a win at home to LASK. United proceed to the quarter’s knowing that any 11 bar the first team are not up to standard while LASK can put the 19/20 season behind them.

Inter Milan 2 vs. 0 Getafe

Lukaku scored in the 33rd minute and Eriksen came of the bench to score in the 83rd minute to give Inter a win against Getafe and take Conte’s men to the next round of the Europa League. Getafe played really well in the first half and dominated play creating several chances and putting Inter on the back foot. The Italians though stood strong and managed to pull through. A dismal post lockdown period comes to an end for Getafe while Inter can still get a trophy for the 19/20 season.

Leverkusen 1 (4) vs. (1) 0 Rangers

Gerard and team had it all to do in this game but they never looked like a threat to Bosz and team. Diaby managed the only goal of the game in the 51st minute but Leverkusen could have arguably had way more. Havertz himself missed a couple of chances, hit the post once and had a brilliant assist taken away from him via a poor finish from Diaby. Leverkusen move on to the quarters while Rangers bring their 19/20 season to an end with the 20/21 season having already started in Scotland.

Sevilla 2 vs. 0 AS Roma

Reguilon scored a brilliant goal in the 21st minute while Nesyri made it 2 right before half time as Sevilla beat Roma to reach the quarters. Roma had no answer to the Spanish team and capped off a lacklustre display with Mancini being sent off at the end of the game. Sevilla move on while Roma can call an end to the season.

Basel 1 (4) vs. (0) 0 Frankfurt

Frankfurt had a mountain to climb to reach the quarter finals and they chose not to climb it as Basel won the game with a goal from Frei in the 88th minute. The Swiss team progress to the quarter finals while Frankfurt never really turned up for the tie.

Wolverhampton 1 (2) vs. (1) 0 Olympiakos

Jimenez scored the only goal of the game in the 8th minute via a penalty as Wolves managed to keep a clean sheet against Olympiakos and progress to the quarters. Olympiakos fell short and never really created any major threat to the Wolves back line.
