Weekend Football Preview

In simpler times many leagues would either be finished or heading towards the end right now and the football world would be preparing for the Euros but in reality the Bundesliga continues on this weekend while the rest of Europe plans to resume football by June.

Hertha Berlin 4 vs. 0 Union Berlin

Hertha were the victors in the Berlin derby on Friday night as they beat rivals Union at home. All the goals came in the 2nd half as Ibisevic, Lukebakio, Cunha, and Boyata all scored. Hertha are 10th in the table, 5 points from a Europa League place while Union are now 12th in the table.

Freiburg vs. Werder Bremen

7th placed Freiburg welcome 17th placed Werder Bremen for what should be a straight forward win for the home team. Freiburg are looking to make the Europa League while Werder are 9 points from safety and need to win starting now to stand any chance. Freiburg should get the three points. The reverse fixture ended 2-2.

Paderborn vs. Hoffenheim

Bottom of the table Paderborn welcome 9th placed Hoffenheim. Paderborn are all but relegated this season and so its more about pride at this stage. Hoffenheim are still in a battle for a European place and so they have more to lose from this game. The away side should get three points. Hoffenheim beat Paderborn 3-0 in the reverse fixture.

Wolfsburg vs. Dortmund

6th placed Wolfsburg welcome 2nd placed Dortmund in a top of the table clash. Wolfsburg are looking to maintain their 6th placed position so that they can keep their Europa League place while Dortmund are in the hunt for the title and cannot afford to drop points. It is an interesting game and Dortmund should face a tougher competition from Wolfsburg than Schalke. Dortmund won the reverse fixture 3-0.

Monchengladbach vs. Leverkusen

Another top of the table clash as 3rd placed Monchengladbach take on 5th placed Leverkusen. It is a big game as a win for the home team could see them move 2nd in the title race and distance Leverkusen from the race. A win for Leverkusen would make the race even more interesting as they would move up to 3rd. A big game with some brilliant players. Monchengladbach won the reverse fixture 1-2.

Bayern Munich vs. Frankfurt

League leaders Bayern welcome Frankfurt who sit 13th and just above the relegation zone. Last season this would have been an interesting fixture but Frankfurt’s form has declined rapidly in the last 12 months and this should be a straight forward win for Bayern. Frankfurt need the win though if they are to keep a safe distance from the relegation zone. Frankfurt did win the reverse fixture 5-1 although Bayern were in dismal form at the time.

Schalke vs. Augsburg

Schalke did not have the best return to football last weekend but still sit 8th and in contention for a Europa League spot. Augsburg are 14th and trying to avoid the relegation zone this season. Schalke should return to winning ways in this game and get some momentum going. Schalke won the reverse fixture 2-3.

Mainz vs. RB Leipzig

15th placed Mainz sit 4 points above the relegation zone as they welcome Leipzig who sit 4th in the table. Leipzig were league leaders at a time but have fallen away in recent game weeks and now find themselves just a point above 5th. The away side need to return to winning ways to maintain some chance at the title and Mainz is the perfect team to face at the moment. Mainz though have a lot to fight for as well and so it won’t be an easy game. Leipzig won the reverse fixture 8-0.

Koln vs. Dusseldorf

11th placed Koln have an outside chance at a Europa League place as they welcome 16th placed Dusseldorf who are in the relegation zone at the moment. Koln would be the favourites for this game but Dusseldorf are the team with much at stake as a loss would see them fall even farther into the relegation zone. Dusseldorf won the reverse fixture 2-0.
