Weekend Football Review

Premier League MW 27

Burnley 3 vs. 0 Bournemouth

A cagey 1st half saw the game open up in the 2nd as Vydra, Rodriguez, and McNeil scored to give Burnley a comfortable win. There was once again controversy by VAR as Bournemouth had equalised after the Burnley goal only for it to be ruled out by VAR because of a handball when it had actually touched the shoulder. The resulting attack then led to the Rodriguez penalty which Burnley converted. Bournemouth will feel robbed but another reason why the referee in charge of VAR on Saturday should not have been functioning it. Burnley move into 10th with the win while Bournemouth remain 16th 2 points above the relegation zone.

Crystal Palace 1 vs. 0 Newcastle

Palace returned to winning ways thanks to a Van Aanholt goal in the 44th minute as Newcastle could not reply back. Lazaro was sent off for Newcastle in the 95th minute to cap off a poor display by the away team. Palace end their winless run to move into 13th while Newcastle drop into 14th now winless in 4 games.

Sheffield United 1 vs. 1 Brighton

Enda Stevens got Sheffield in front in the 26th minute but Brighton equalised thanks to a goal from Maupay in the 30th minute. Neither team could then break each other down in the 60 minutes that followed as they ended up sharing points. Sheffield drop down into 7th as they sit a point behind United who are 5th. Brighton remain 15th but now 4 points from the relegation zone as they try to survive for next season.

Southampton 2 vs. 0 Aston Villa

Shane Long scored in the 8th minute and Armstrong scored in the 95th minute as Southampton capped off a solid display against Villa to return to winning ways. Villa made it 3 defeats in a row and now head into next weeks Capital One Cup final in poor form. Southampton remain 12th while Villa remain 17th and a point above the relegation zone.

Leicester 0 vs. 1 Man City

Jesus came off the bench to score in the 80th minute to give City 3 points and a good cushion in 2nd. There was VAR controversy in this game as well when De Bruyne handled the ball but a penalty was not given. Aguero had also missed a penalty in the 2nd half. Leicester are now winless in their last 3 as they remain 3rd but only 6 points above Chelsea who are 4th. City remain 22 points behind Liverpool but now 7 points clear of Leicester although for now it doesn’t really matter with their European ban.

Man United 3 vs. 0 Watford

Fernandes scored a penalty right before half time to get his first goal for United while Martial and Greenwood added goals in the 2nd half in what was a comfortable win for the home team. Watford had plenty of chances to score but failed to finish them and also had a goal ruled out unjustly due to VAR. Martial also looked offside for his goal but VAR failed to review it. United climb up to 5th as they sit 3 points behind Chelsea and for now in a Champions League spot while Watford remain 19th and a point from safety.

Wolverhampton 3 vs. 0 Norwich

Jota scored his 4th and 5th goal this week in the 1st half while Jimenez added the 3rd in the 2nd half as Wolves got an easy win against bottom of the table Norwich. Wolves remain 8th in the table but now 2 points from 5th while Norwich remain bottom of the table and 7 points from safety.

Arsenal 3 vs. 2 Everton

Arsenal continued their unbeaten run in 2020 as they edged out Everton for 3 points in an entertaining game. Calvert-Lewin scored in the 1st minute to give Everton a stunning lead before Nketiah equalised for Arsenal in the 27th minute. Aubameyang then gave Arsenal the lead in the 33rd minute before Richarlison equalised right before half time. Aubameyang then restored Arsenal’s lead in the 46th minute. Everton dominated the rest of the 2nd half and Calvert-Lewin missed some great chances but the Toffees could not equalise and Arteta’s men held on. Arsenal move into 9th now 4 points from 5th while Everton drop down into 11th.

Liverpool 3 vs. 2 West Ham

This game should not have been this close as West Ham were expected to get thrashed but it was Liverpool who should count themselves lucky as they escaped with 3 points. Wijnaldum opened the scoring for the home team in the 9th minute but Diop equalised soon after in the 12th. Fornals then gave West Ham the lead in the 54th minute but Salah equalised in the 68th minute after his shot stumbled through Fabianksi’s legs who was poor. The winner from Mane came in the 81st minute as a deflection caught Fabianksi in no mans land and Mane was able to tap in to an empty goal. Fortune struck the Reds once again as they left with three points. Liverpool remain top and now equal City’s record of 18 straight wins but fall short of the goals conceded record set by Chelsea. West Ham remain 18th and a point from safety on a night when they should have left with 3 points.

La Liga MW 25

Barcelona thrashed Eibar 5-0 with Messi scoring 4 goals, Levante beat Real Madrid 1-0 with Hazard suffering another injury that rules him out for the season. Sevilla beat Getafe 0-3, and Atletico beat Villarreal 3-1. Barcelona head to the top of the table opening up a two point gap from Real which sets up a spicy Clasico next weekend. Atletico move into 3rd 10 points behind Real while Sevilla move into 4th. Getafe drop down into 5th. Movement in La Liga as Messi drives Barcelona’s bid to win the League once again while Real stumble.

Serie MW 25

Napoli beat Brescia 1-2, Juventus beat SPAL 1-2, Milan drew with Fiorentina 1-1, Lazio beat Geona 2-3, and Roma beat Lecce 4-0. Roma, and Inter’s games were postponed as a Coronavirus outbreak in areas of their games caused concern and so the games were cancelled. Juventus remain 1 point clear at the top of the table with Lazio behind them, while Inter are 5 points behind Lazio but have a game in hand. Atalanta are 4th and Roma with a game in hand are 3 points behind them in 5th but Atalanta have twice Roma’s goal difference. Napoli are 6th and Milan are 7th. Interesting week in Italy but the threat of Coronavirus has put a damper on affairs.

Bundesliga MW 23

Bayern beat Paderborn 3-2, Monchengladbach drew with Hoffenheim 1-1, Dortmund beat Werder Bremen 0-2, Leipzig thrashed Schalke 0-5, and Leverkusen beat Augsburg 2-0. Bayern stay top, a point ahead of Leipzig while Dortmund are 3rd and Monchengladbach drop into 4th. Leverkusen are now level with Monchengladbach as they sit 5th while Schalke are comfortably behind in 6th. Much like Italy it’s a 3 horse race in Germany as Leipzig regain some form and remain right behind Bayern while Dortmund are within touching distance of the two.

Ligue MW 26

Lyon beat Metz 0-2, Nantes beat Marseille 1-3, Monaco drew with Dijon 1-1, Lille beat Toulouse 3-0, Rennes beat Nimes 2-1, and PSG beat Bordeaux 4-3 in a fiery game. PSG now go 13 points clear of 2nd placed Marseille while Marseille remain comfortable in 2nd 8 points ahead of 3rd placed Rennes. Lille are 4th and Monaco are 5th. The race for 4th is the real entertaining race while the rest is almost all sorted as season after season PSG continue to dominate French football.
