Weekend Football Preview

Big weekend of football!

Premier League MW 17

Liverpool vs. Watford

Liverpool take on bottom of the table Watford in what should be a straightforward game. Nigel Pearson is the new manager in charge of Watford and while they might survive relegation Liverpool should easily win this game.

Burnley vs. Newcastle

Burnley sit 13th in the table having lost their last three games as they entertain 11th placed Newcastle who are in fine form having won their last two. The two teams seem to heading in the opposite directions and Sean Dyche really needs to start picking up points. This should be a close game with not much between the two teams in terms of quality. Maximin’s injury will be a big miss for Newcastle but they should have enough for a point or more against Burnley.

Leicester vs. Norwich

2nd placed Leicester take on 19th placed Norwich in what should be another straightforward game for Rodgers as he looks to catch up to Liverpool. Leicester are in fine form both defensively and offensively and Norwich have lost their last two. Leicester win.

Sheffield United vs. Aston Villa

8th placed Sheffield take on 17th placed Aston Villa as Sheffield look to build on their win from last weekend. Villa are above the relegation zone based on goal difference and so a win would be a massive boost for them having lost their last two games. Sheffield have are the better team at the moment and while it might be a close game I expect the Blades to win.

Southampton vs. West Ham

18th placed Southampton take on 16th placed West Ham with Pellegrini under pressure once again. West Ham have lost 4 of their last 5 while Southampton lost last weekend after having gone through some decent form. Out of the two teams West Ham have the better squad but Southampton have the better form and so this should be an interesting game which if Pellegrini looses could spell the end for the manager.

Man United vs. Everton

Super Sunday starts out with 14th placed Everton heading to Old Trafford to play 5th placed United. United are in good form currently and their recent wins against Tottenham and City have given the club a new lease of life. Everton sacked Silva and then beat Chelsea last weekend with a brilliant performance under Ferguson. United rested players in the Europa League but is the games against the bottom 14 teams they struggle in. The question for Everton is whether they can carry the momentum from the Chelsea game into this one. A fun encounter which gives me a feeling that Everton will take at least a point from.

Wolverhampton vs. Tottenham

6th vs. 7th as Nuno entertains Mourinho’s Tottenham. Spurs are getting wins but also conceding while they have lost to United and Bayern over the last few weeks. Wolves have been in great form as they have climbed the table and qualified for the round of 32 in the Europa League. Wolves are known as the top 6 killers and this should be a goalscoring game that I hope that Wolves win or a draw would be great as well.

Arsenal vs. Man City

9th placed Arsenal welcome 3rd placed Man City with both teams struggling this season for different reasons. Arsenal just managed to win their first game in 10 against West Ham last weekend while City lost to Ole’s United as they drifted 14 points away from Liverpool. City have always bounced back with big wins after their losses but Arsenal will be rested and ready to carry on from their win. Big questions for both teams and honestly an Arsenal win would raise questions around Pep and his future.

Crystal Palace vs. Brighton

10th placed Palace take on 12th placed Brighton with the two teams in relatively decent form. Hodgson has been working well with the Eagles while Potter has been great for Brighton and this should be an interesting game between two managers at the opposite ends of their careers. A draw is expected.

La Liga MW 17

Barcelona travel to Real Sociedad, Atletico take on Osasuna, Sevilla take on Villarreal, and Valencia entertain Real Madrid. Big clashes for Barcelona and Real with the two teams level on points. This weekend could see a small gap created between the two teams in the title race as the rest play catchup.

Serie MW 16

Napoli entertain Parma in Gattuso’s first game in charge, Milan welcome Sassuolo, Atalanta travel to Bologna, Juventus take on Udinese, Roma entertain SPAL, and Inter travel to Fiorentina. Inter created a one point gap from Juventus and will be looking to bounce back from getting knocked out in the Champions League while Sarri will be hoping to close the gap.

Bundesliga MW 15

Bayern take on Werder Bremen, Dortmund travel to Mainz, Leipzig take on Dusseldorf, Wolfsburg entertain league leaders Monchengladbach, and Schalke welcome Frankfurt. Tough fixtures in the Bundesliga as it continues to entertain this season.

Ligue MW 18

Lille welcome Montpellier, Marseille travel to Metz, Monaco travel to Angers, Lyon welcome Rennes, and St Etienne play PSG. Tricky fixtures in Ligue 1 but PSG should maintain their lead at the top as the rest fight for 2nd.
