Norwich City 2 vs. 3 Chelsea Review

Chelsea have their first win!

Chelsea’s season got up and running in reality as we fought hard to beat Norwich at Carrow Road. It was a bright and sunny day as the two teams kicked off another weekend of Premier League football. Daniel Farke picked the expected lineup for Norwich while Lampard stuck to what he knew. Kepa started in goal, Emerson, Zouma, Christensen, and Azpi made up the back four. Jorginho, Kovacic, and Barkley made up the midfield three after Pedro was injured in the warm-up. Mount, and Pulisic played on the wings while Lampard stuck with Tammy up front.

Chelsea started the game brightly as usual and we got a goal in the 3rd minute as Azpi ran down the flank to cross the ball into the box where it found Tammy who hit a first time volley. Tammy got his goal and ran to Lampard as the whole club and team felt happy for the guy. The joy was short lived though as Pukki went down the other end and crossed the ball into the box where it found an incoming Cantwell to equalise in the 6th minute. Chelsea created more chances while Norwich countered well but Chelsea regained the lead in the 17th minute after Pulisic did well to pass into Mount who created space for himself to make it 1-2 with a brilliant finish. Chelsea had more chances but we could not finish while Norwich continued to look dangerous on the counter and it was Pukki who levelled the score at the 30th minute after breaking the line and finishing past Kepa. The game dragged to half-time as neither side gave any space to the other.

The second half started with Chelsea again holding the upper hand as we created chance after chance. Norwich stood strong as they sat back for much of the opening 20 minutes. Tammy made it 2-3 in the 68th minute after Kovacic did well to dribble and pass it to Abraham who made space and got a powerful low shot past Krul. Lamps then brought on Giroud for Tammy and Willian for Pulisic while Mount came off later on after picking up a knock with Alonso taking his place. Chelsea saw out the result and Lampard got his first competitive win as a Chelsea manager.

First things first the refereeing was shocking in the game as several decisions that should have gone Chelsea’s way did not. Azpi was brought down in the box but VAR saw no issue, Zouma scored but VAR deemed that Giroud had unjustly taken the ball off of Kroos, and Mount was stamped on but no card was given. The referee’s really need to pick up in their performance as several games had issues. Now for the players, Kepa did ok as he continues to look for his first clean sheet this season although the defence did not help. Azpi was better and provided a brilliant assist for the first goal, Zouma and Christensen were solid but had a few shaky moments, and Emerson did well as he continues to improve. Jorginho was ok as he looked off pace for much of the game but Kovacic was brilliant and got an assist for his hard work as dribbled all over the place and won the ball at crucial moments. Barkley was not great in the first half but got better in the 2nd although no where near his pre season form. Mount was again brilliant and continues to show why he might be Lampard’s most trusted player, he also got another goal to his name. Pulisic seems to be learning and to judge him this season would be unfair, he had bright moments, he got an assist, and he could have had a couple more in the first half. Pulisic does loose the ball at times but that has more to do with physicality than anything else. Tammy was picked over Michy and he restored the faith of Lampard as he got two brilliant goals to his name. Tammy was beginning to vanish in the 2nd half but popped up for the goal as like the rest of the youth products he just needs to play without fear. Giroud did not have much to do, Willian was poor once again, and Alonso actually looked decent when he came on.

A tough test that Chelsea pass as it does look like Norwich will be one of those teams that take some points off the top 6. Four goals scored so far 2 by Mount and 2 by Tammy, both academy products as the hard work continues. Next up Sheffield United at home.
