Chelsea vs. Leicester Preview

First home game for Lampard!

Frank Lampard has not had the easiest of starts at Chelsea, the 4-0 loss to United flattered the Manchester team and Liverpool were second best for large parts of the game in Istanbul. Those results ended in defeats though and now Lampard has the opportunity to get his first win for Chelsea in front of the home fans. Brendan Rodgers and Leicester will have other ideas in mind as they look to challenge the top 10 sides for a Europa League place or better.

Brendan Rodgers joined Leicester during the latter half of last season and got them to a 9th placed finish after Claude Puel had been relatively poor. Pre-season has been promising, Leicester have signed Ayoze Perez, and Tielemans permanently. Last weekend Leicester drew at home against Wolves but showed why they should be taken seriously. Leicester have a strong defence although Maguire having left has put a slight downgrade on the area. Ndidi, is great in the pivot and up front players like Maddison, Tielemans, Perez, and Vardy can cause enough havoc for any opposition. Leicester will be coming to Stamford Bridge seeking 3 points from the get go, and might play on the counter similar to United.

Chelsea went through a gruelling 120 minutes in Istanbul before losing on penalties. The trip there and back and given the game only came 2 days after United meant that Chelsea have not had time to really practice for Leicester as the squad focuses on recovery. In his pre match press conference Lampard stated that he would switch formations based on the opponent and that players like Mount, Tammy etc are very important going forward. While several of the players played 120 minutes Lampard should still have a decent squad to select from even if he rests some players.

Chelsea Team Preview

Chelsea might go with a 4-2-3-1 for this game, although we would be able to switch to a 4-3-3 in game. Kepa should start in goal, Alonso, Christensen, Rudiger, and Azpi in defence. Jorginho, and Kante should start in the pivot with Pulisic, Mount, and Willian in front of them. Giroud did well against Liverpool and it’s a toss up between him and Tammy, Tammy might be benched to take some heat off of him but I expect him to start.

Starting XI Prediction
