Chelsea 2 vs. 0 Manchester City Review

Once again thanks to Chelsea their is a title race on our hands.

There was a feeling that Chelsea would turn up for this game and we did in typical Chelsea fashion as we fought hard and scored good goals and kept a clean sheet against City to give them their first defeat of the season. Sarri elected for a false nine formation but kept most of his starting XI as the back five were the usual suspects. Kovacic joined Jorginho and Kante in midfield, and Willian, and Pedro joined Hazard up front. City also went for a similar formation with Sterling starting upfront flanked by Sane and Mahrez.

City dominated the first half as Chelsea played with their backs against the wall. City created attack after attack but could not manage to get shots on goal as our defenders channeled their inner Terry’s and defended resolutely. Our first goal came as City were pressing high and Luiz gave a great diagonal ball to Pedro who switched it to Willian on the left flank. Willian crossed it in but City defended and it fell to Alonso who passed it to Hazard. Hazard held on and crossed the ball into the box for an incoming Kante to smash into the goal. Chelsea began to gain momentum from the goal as Chelsea headed into the first half with a surprising lead. Chelsea began the second half as the better team as we dominated play and created chances for 10 15 minutes. City then had a period of dominance as they had 5 or 6 corners in quick succession but Chelsea again defended brilliantly. Our second goal came as Barkley got the Blues a corner and Hazard crossed the ball for Luiz to head a brilliant looping ball into the goal. Fans were delirious and Chelsea were now 2-0 up. Chelsea saw out the rest of the game as the only threat came as Kepa misplaced a pass which then led to a shot from Jesus that he saved. With the final whistle Chelsea had sealed three points and any “poor” form was forgotten.

Kepa was brilliant in goal, Azpi, Rudiger, and Alonso were great defensively but the man of the match was David Luiz as he led the team and was a major player in both goals. Everything that City was created seemed to have been blocked by Luiz as he dominated the defence. Jorginho was silent but conducted things well, Kante was brilliant and proved that Sarri is playing him in the right position as he now has 2 goals and 2 assists. I don’t like Willian but he worked hard defensively and had a good game, Hazard had little to do but held the ball well and provided assists for both goals, something tells me we might see more of him upfront. Pedro was also great as he defended well. Barkley, Loftus-Cheek, and Giroud all came on to play a part in the win three points were sealed. Sarri forced City to play the long ball as we blocked the lines in between the players Pep was sour after the defeat but after our second half performance there was only one real winner. Chelsea now head into their final game of the Europa League as we remain 4th in the Premier League. City drop down into second 1 point behind Liverpool.
