Weekend Football Review

Some surprising results while others were expected.

Premier League MW 12

Cardiff City 2 vs. 1 Brighton

Cardiff City got their second win of the season at home against Brighton after Brighton had taken the lead in the 6th minute via Dunk. Paterson equalised for Cardiff and Bamba scored in the 90th minute to seal the three points. Cardiff are 18th and Brighton are 12th in what is a tightly nit bottom of half of the table. 

Huddersfield 1 vs. 1 West Ham

Pritchard gave Huddersfield the lead in the 6th minute as they seemed to have been heading for their second win of the season but Anderson scored for West Ham in the 74th minute to share the spoils between the sides. Huddersfield drop down to 19th while West Ham are now 13th in the table. 

Leicester 0 vs. 0 Burnley

The points were shared at the King Power as neither team was able to break the others defence in a tight game. Leicester are still 10th in the table while Burnley who are 15th ended their run of losses and conceding ridiculous amounts of goals. 

Newcastle 2 vs 1 Bournemouth

Newcastle managed their second win of the season and their second win in a row against an inform Bournemouth side. All the goals were scored in the first half as Rondon scored a double before Lerma notched one back before half time. Newcastle were expected to lose but now sit 14th in the table having picked up momentum going into the international break. Bournemouth remain 6th in the table. 

Southampton 1 vs. 1 Watford

Southampton recovered from their recent thrashings by sharing a point with Watford during the weekend. Gabbiadini scored in the 20th minute but Holebas equalised in the 82nd minute to ruin the Saints celebrations. Southampton are 17th in the table while Watford are 7th level on points with Bournemouth in 6th. 

Crystal Palace 0 vs. 1 Tottenham

Tottenham got another narrow win as Foyth scored in the 66th minute to seal the three points in this London Derby. Palace drop further down the table as they sit 16th while Tottenham move into 4th three points clear of Arsenal in 5th. 

Liverpool 2 vs. 0 Fulham

Liverpool continued their unbeaten start to the season with a comfortable victory against Fulham. Fulham had their fair share of chances in the first half but Salah gave Liverpool the lead in the 41st minute. Fulham were no where near as good in the second half as Shaqiri sealed the points in the 53rd minute. Liverpool go clear in 2nd while Fulham remain bottom of the table. 

Arsenal 1 vs. 1 Wolverhampton

Arsenal just about managed to get a point after Wolves dominated the game. Cavaleiro gave Wolves the lead in the 13th minute and they managed to dominate the whole game but Mkhitaryan scored in the 86th minute to share points with Wolves. Arsenal drop down to 5th while Wolves drop down to 11th. 

Man City 3 vs. 1 Man United

David Silva scored in the 12th minute as City began the game in brilliant fashion. United grew into the game and managed to frustrate City for the rest of the half. Aguero then doubled City’s lead in the 48th minute but Martial got one back for United via a penalty in the 58th minute. City then sealed the deal with a 44 pass goal as Gundogan scored in the 86th minute. The final goal showed the gulf in class between the two sides and how much United needed to do to catch up to City. City remain top of the table with 32 points while United are 8th with 20 points.

La Liga MW 12

Atletico beat Bilbao 3-2 in what was a tight game in Madrid, Barcelona lost to Real Betis 3-4 in a thrilling game at the Camp Nou, Sevilla beat Espanyol 2-1, and Real won away at Celta Vigo 2-4 to maintain their unbeaten start under Solari. Barcelona remain top but have their lead cut down to 1 point as Sevilla, Atletico and Alaves follow. 

Serie MW 12

Napoli beat Geona 1-2, Inter lost away at Atlanta 4-1, and Juventus beat Milan 0-2 in the clash of the weekend. Juventus maintain their six point gap over Napoli while Inter and Lazio follow. 

Bundesliga MW 11

Monchengladbach beat Werder Bremen 1-3, Leverkusen lost to RB Leipzig 3-0, Schalke lost to Frankfurt 3-0, and Dortmund beat Bayern 3-2 in a thrilling game. Dortmund lead the table while Monchengladbach, Leipzig, and Frankfurt follow. 

Ligue MW 13

Lyon beat Guingamp 2-4, Marseille beat Dijon 2-0, and Henry’s Monaco got thrashed by PSG 0-4 as PSG made it 13 wins to start the season. PSG remain 13 points clear at the top of the table while Lille, Montpellier and Lyon follow.
