Chelsea 0 vs. 2 Man City Community Shield Review

Feeling’s aside a realistic result.

Chelsea lost out to Man City in what was a lacklustre performance by the blues. The lineup was similar to the predicted one as Fabregas kept his place after recovering from an injury. The predicted lineup for City was completely different to the one fielded by Pep as mostly all of the first team stars bar De Bruyne featured or started in the game. City started the better side and Aguero scored his 200th goal for City via some easy play and poor defending by Chelsea. Chelsea began to grow into the game and Hudson-Odoi had some great chances during the rest of the first half. City started the second half in the same manner and doubled their lead in the 58th minute via Aguero again. Chelsea though did not grow into the half and City were dominant as the went on to have 18 shots with 9 on target. The final whistle brought an end to proceedings and while no conclusions should be drawn from a Community Shield game some analysis can be given.

City were great and it is going to be interesting to see how they go about defending their Premier League title. This is now Pep’s third season in charge and compared to his first season the change was drastic. Sarri should not feel too aggrieved as we were without Hazard and Kante who are literally two of the most important players. Player wise Caballero was ok made some saves but also let in two goals. Azpilicueta was good and proved that he can play in any system. Rudiger seems to be growing into the philosophy although David Luiz though he does have the experience lacked pace and defensive awareness. Christensen could take his place back from the Brazilian. Alonso was poor and was caught out on several occasions, I personally think the system does not suit him and Emerson should have started. Emerson did not even make it to the bench and it should be asked whether we need to invest in a left back before the transfer window ends. Social media was rife with Jorginho complaints but Jorginho is no Kante, at Napoli he had Allan doing the dirty work and at Chelsea once Kante is fit we will see the true Jorginho. Fabregas is most likely to loose his place to Kante. Barkley was fit and strong but again lacked the end product on numerous occasions. Hudson-Odoi was the star once again and looked to create something positive whenever given the opportunity. Pedro was not great and after yesterday’s performance I really hope we are getting Martial or Zaha. Morata was missing but when your team does not have control of the ball and you are settling into a new system the strikers are the most likely to suffer. It was only the fourth game of Sarri’s Chelsea career with key players missing and so there should be no judgement at all. A clear positive was the amount of passes we made and the drastic improvement in possession we had.

Napoli players said that Chelsea fans would need to have patience and even though I liked Conte, chants of Antonio, Antonio were completely unnecessary and ill timed and fans like that should be ignored completely. One more friendly on Tuesday against Lyon before the season opener against Huddersfield on Saturday, the remaining players should be back and hopefully hyped for the season ahead, also hopefully Martial and Zaha join them.
